  • Patent number: 5011726
Abstract: An adhesive composition for roofing such as shingles is disclosed which is composed of a hard asphaltic bitumen fraction having a penetration number at 77.degree. F. of from 0 to 30 dmm and a softening point of from about 150.degree. to 220.degree. F. and an elastomeric composition composed of a thermoplastic elastomer and a plasticizer wherein the overall adhesive composition has a penetration number of from 30 to 100 dmm at 130.degree. F. and a softening point of 140.degree. to 230.degree. F. The inventive composition is self-sealing and exhibits excellent squash resistance, low temperature properties and resistance to blowoff. The composition can be used with shingles as well as other types of roofing coverings.

  • Patent number: 4917764
Abstract: A glass fiber mat having improved strength and fiber wettability is provided by incorporation of a critical amount of between 1% and 6% by weight (solids) of a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex having a pH between about 5 and about 8.5, a glass transition temperature (Tg) less than 25.degree. C. and a surface tension less than 50 dynes/cm, and 94% and 99% by weight (solids) of a urea-formaldehyde resin solution having a pH of from about 6.5 to about 8.5.

  • Patent number: 4851500
Abstract: A process and apparatus is provided for making a rubber-like product from rubber scrap, such as recycled tire scrap. The process includes mixing the rubber scrap with from 1 percent to 15 percent, with respect to the weight of the rubber scrap, of added sulphur, and applying a pressure thereto of about 1000 to 3000 pounds per square inch for 1 to 10 minutes at a temperature of from about 250 degrees F. to about 450 degrees F. In addition, 1 to 8 percent, with respect to the weight of the rubber scrap, of antioxidants and antiozonants are added to the mixture of rubber scrap and sulphur. The sulphur is free sulphur. Derivative sulphur compounds, or like vulcanizing agents, can be added in place of the free sulphur of about 1 to 45 percent of the weight of the rubber scrap. The rubber scrap is buffing of recycled tire rubber, or powder made from recycled tire rubber. An apparatus for carrying out the process is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4755545
Abstract: A low temperature self-sealing roofing adhesive blend comprising(a) 50-95% by weight of a bituminous component having an asphalt component Index (ACI) less than 0.26 and an asphaltene content less than 20% which component is a road paving asphalt or a blend of road paving asphalt and a hard resin asphalt combined in a weight ratio of between about 1:2 and about 5:1;(b) 1-6% by weight of a thermoplastic block polymer of styrene and butadiene monomers consisting essntially of between 0% and 90% of the styrene/butadiene diblock polymer having a Brookfield viscosity (25 wt. % toluene solution) at 77.degree. F. of between about 500 and about 5,000 cps and between 100% and 10% of the styrene/butadiene/styrene triblock polymer having a Brookfield viscosity (25 wt. % toluene solution) at 77.degree. F. of between about 1,000 and about 50,000 cps and(c) 4-40% by weight of an inert filler. The invention also pertains to the use of the above blend as a roofing self-sealing adhesive.
