Patent number: 6246346Abstract: A storage system employs a method for encoding a sequence of input data blocks into a sequence of codewords. Each input data block includes a first predetermined number of bits (the data block length). Each codeword includes a second predetermined number of bits (the codeword length). The code rate, i.e., the ratio of the first number to the second number, is greater than ¾. The method is performed in a sampled-data channel in a storage system; and the channel includes a circuit the performance of which is adversely affected by an excessive run length of bits between occurrences of a predetermined influential pattern. Preferably, the influential pattern is a two-bit sequence of adjacent 1's, which favorably influences the performance of a timing recovery circuit. The method includes receiving the sequence of input data blocks and generating the sequence of codewords responsive to the received sequence of input data blocks.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1997Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Western Digital CorporationInventors: Robert Leslie Cloke, Patrick James Lee, Steven William McLaughlin

Bioreactor process for the continuous removal of organic compounds from a vapor phase process stream
Patent number: 5954858Abstract: The present invention provides a method for treating volatile hazardous air pollutant (VHAP) and volatile organic compound (VOC) waste products from gas streams. The system disclosed herein employs microporous hydrophobic membranes to remove VHAPs/VOCs from a gas stream into an oleophilic stripping fluid. The stripping fluid is directed into a separate biomembrane reactor wherein the VHAPs/VOCs are transferred across a second microporous hydrophobic membrane into an aqueous nutrient medium, where the extracted VHAPs/VOCs are degraded by microorganisms residing on the surface of the membrane. VHAPs/VOCs are degraded to carbon dioxide, water, and cell debris. The disclosed system uncouples biotreatment from waste generation, such that operation of the biotreatment unit can be continuous and optimized independently of plant work schedules or fluctuations in pollutant concentrations entering the system.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1996Date of Patent: September 21, 1999Assignee: North Carolina State UniversityInventors: Steven William Peretti, Stuart Marc Thomas, Robert Donald Shepherd, Jr. -
Patent number: 5912850Abstract: A multi-port RAM (random access memory) includes RAM cells which are coupled to respective row and column lines of each port. RAM cells selected by signals on the row and column lines of a port store binary data. A ground level voltage is applied onto selected column lines in a shadow write mode. Patent number: 5901093Abstract: An invention is disclosed which implements bit line redundancy in a memory module, such as a dynamic random access memory (DRAM), in accordance with a block write operation. The block write operation is commonly used in dual port RAMs, sometimes referred to as video random access memories (VRAM). Specifically, a block write operation allows a plurality of bits of data to be written to a plurality of adjacent bit lines defined by a column address. The precise combination of adjacent bit lines selected by the column address is designated by an address mask. The invention provides a memory module with a redundant bit decoder that incorporates an address masking function into the redundant bit decoder during block write operations and also bypasses a masking function during normal read and write operations. This redundant bit decoder allows a single redundant bit line to replace any single defective bit line of the selected group of block write bit lines.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: May 4, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Nathan Rafael Hiltebeitel, Robert Tamlyn, Steven William Tomashot, Thomas Walter Wyckoff
