A score is established based on criteria comprising the level of distress of the patient and a severity of the patient symptoms. The score correlates the level of distress of the patient with a clinical course of the life-threatening or life-limiting progressive illness. One or more patient care services appropriate for the clinical course of the life-threatening or life-limiting progressive illness and the level of distress of the patient is determined based on the score.
