    Abstract: A high performance absorbent particulate composition and a method of preparation in which non-colloidal solid filler core is substantially encapsulated within a bounding layer of hydrogel forming polymer is disclosed. In preferred embodiments, the size of the solid filler core is about 10 to about 1500 microns contributing about 20% to about 90% by weight of the composition. The particles of the present invention provide rapid absorption of a large volume of aqueous fluids. A wide range of performance properties are achieved through selection of the filler core and the polymer.
