Patent number: 5536133Abstract: A lift truck pivot frame paper roll handling clamp assembly for engaging and moving paper rolls of varying diameter. The clamp has a mounting frame that is rotatably mounted on a lifting apparatus of the lift truck. A pair of sub-frames are pivotally attached to the mounting frame by four pivot arms which permit eccentrical pivoting of the sub-frame in relation to the mounting frame. This eccentric pivotal motion is essentially a guided linear side shift movement of one end of the sub-frame and guided a circular segment path at the other end thereof. This results in a turning generally about a "floating point" approximately halfway between the center of gravity of the roll and the body of the clamp. The clamp assembly also includes a pair of hydraulically actuated opposing clamp arms pivotally connected to the sub-frame for gripping paper rolls of varying diameter.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1995Date of Patent: July 16, 1996Assignee: Long Reach Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Lawrence R. Velez, Stuart W. Sinclair

Patent number: 5033933Abstract: A carton clamp load having a pad on the inner side for clamping a load, a first spring beam positioned outside of the pad and supported from its back end, and a second spring beam positioned outside of the first beam and supported at its back end. A uniform distribution of load is provided by supporting the front end of the pad adjacent the front ends of the first and second beams and supporting the back end of the pad vertically from the first beam and horizontally from the second beam.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1990Date of Patent: July 23, 1991Assignee: Long Reach Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Stuart W. Patent number: 4655672Abstract: A no crease system for a push/pull attachment on a lift truck for avoiding damaging loads. A gripper having a bar and a shoe for gripping and releasing a slip sheet carrying a load is provided with a control circuit for closing the gripper to the gripping position when the push plate is extended for protecting the load from damage by an open gripper. The circuit includes a valve connected to the push/pull attachment and actuated by the push/pull attachment when the push plate is fully extended. The valve may be deactuated by a control switch.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1986Date of Patent: April 7, 1987Assignee: Long Reach Manufacturing Co.Inventors: Stuart W. Sinclair, Kenneth R. Lane

Patent number: 4642020Abstract: A clamp attachment for use on a lift truck having a body adapted to be mounted on a lift truck which includes a plurality of elongate spaced parallel guides. Each guide supports a longitudinally movable slide connected to a load clamp and actuated by piston and cylinder assembly. The slides are reduced in weight by being tubular members and a solid heel support member is positioned in the outer end of each of the tubular members for providing strength. The heel support fills the cross-sectional area of the tubular slide. A heel plate which is connected to and supports a load clamp is bolted to the slide and heel support. The heel extends a distance into the end of the slide sufficient to reduce the stress concentration through a cross section containing a bolt to less than the stress concentration in the tubular slide alone. The solid heel support member is of a higher breaking strength than the tubular slide.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1985Date of Patent: February 10, 1987Assignee: Long Reach Manufacturing Co.Inventor: Stuart W. Sinclair

Patent number: 4636131Abstract: An attachment for lift trucks to enable the truck to work in narrow aisles and manipulate loads in front of and to both sides of the truck without turning the truck. A side shifter which includes a pair of parallel moving arms for supporting the load in which the arms are pivotally supported from a track intermediate the ends of the arms. The side shifter retracts within the width of the truck, but extends beyond the sides of the truck for handling loads.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1985Date of Patent: January 13, 1987Assignee: Long Reach Manufacturing Co.Inventor: Stuart W. Patent number: 4573858Abstract: A clamping attachment with a hydraulically actuated pivoting long arm and a pivoting short arm. The hydraulic actuators are connected in parallel where both arms move simultaneously inwardly until one arm contacts a load and stops and the second arm will continue inwardly. A biasing valve insures that the long arm opens first before the short arm opens. The long arm is actuated by first and second crank links to provide maximum force at the open position. The short arm is pivotally connected closer to the center line of the frame than the long arm allowing the long arm to be positioned in the maximum force position, allows positioning of the load close to the frame center line and reduces travel of the long arm. A swivel connection in the hydraulic control system prevents operation of any arm in the down position. The frame of the clamp is asymmetrical.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1984Date of Patent: March 4, 1986Assignee: Long Reach Manufacturing Co.Inventor: Stuart W. Sinclair

Patent number: 4556359Abstract: A clamp attachment for use on a lift truck having a plurality of slides movable in vertically spaced parallel guides with first and second load clamps connected to the slides and actuated by first and second piston and cylinder assemblies. A ball and socket support supports each of the assemblies from the body for automatically aligning the assemblies for reducing shock load and binding of the assemblies. The supports are limited from rotating about their longitudinal axis. The piston end of the assemblies is removable for easily maintenance while the cylinder remains on the attachment. A front openable hydraulic compartment is positioned in front of the assemblies for simplifying maintenance and for reducing the thickness of the attachment.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1984Date of Patent: December 3, 1985Assignee: Anderson, Clayton & Co.Inventor: Stuart W. Patent number: 4467894Abstract: A fluid power system for actuating three separately controllable double acting fluid motors each selectively providing a separate function in which the number of hydraulic lines to the motors is minimized. A first function valve supplies power to the first motor and a second function valve provides power to a selector valve which selectively connects the power to the second and third motors. The selector valve is pilot actuated from one of the lines to the first motor and a control valve supplies power to the one line for actuating the selector valve. The system is particularly useful for a lift truck for minimizing the number of hydraulic lines connected to the motors on the carriage of the truck.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1982Date of Patent: August 28, 1984Assignee: Anderson, Clayton & Co.Inventor: Stuart W. Patent number: 4090628Abstract: A forklift clamp having first and second arms extending horizontally outwardly and having generally flat outsides and insides and a thin cross section whereby the arms may readily move into and out of small spaces. At least one of the arms is movable toward the other arm for supporting a load therebetween. At least one of the arms is pivotally connected at its inner end to a vertical frame and hydraulic power means rotates the pivoting arm about the pivot inwardly for moving the outer ends of the arms toward each other for uniformly distributing the gripping pressure of the flat insides of the arm on a load, and rotate the arm outwardly for providing an operating clearance between the outer ends of the arms and the load. Preferably, the arms are decreasingly tapering in thickness from the inner ends towards the outer ends for decreasing the operating clearance required. Preferably, the arms are supported in horizontal tracks which are rotated for rotating the arms.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1976Date of Patent: May 23, 1978Assignee: Anderson, Clayton & Co.Inventor: Stuart W.
