  • Patent number: 6316913
Abstract: A system and method for determining a capacity of a battery in a battery string that provides power to a load. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a power converter, having an input couplable across the battery and an output couplable across the battery string, that is adapted to transfer power from the battery to the load over a period of time and (2) a voltage sensor, associated with the power converter, that measures voltages of the battery during the period of time, wherein the voltages indicate the capacity of the battery.

  • Patent number: 6304059
Abstract: For use with a battery plant coupled to a source of electrical power and having a power bus coupled to a load, the battery plant including a battery string coupled across a pair of rails of said power bus, a battery management system, method of operation therefor and battery plant employing the same. In one embodiment, the battery management system includes a DC/DC converter, couplable in series with the battery string, adapted to condition a voltage provided to the battery string as a function of a characteristic of the battery string. The battery management system also includes a switching circuit, coupled across the DC/DC converter, adapted to selectively decouple the DC/DC converter from the battery string thereby allowing the battery string to power the load.

  • Patent number: 6187474
Abstract: The present invention provides, in one embodiment, a battery container. In this particular embodiment, the container comprises a housing having side walls and a spacing ridge formed in and extending outwardly from the side walls. The spacing ridge forms a groove on an interior surface of the walls and has a slot formed in the spacing ridge at first and second opposing ends of the housing. In an alternate embodiment, the spacing ridge has a plurality of slots formed on opposing ends of the container. Typically, two adjacent slots are formed on each end such that opposing ends of the handle may engage the retaining pin through the slots. The container further comprises a handle and a retaining pin configured to be received within the interior groove adjacent the slot. The handle is cooperatively engageable with the retaining pin to provide a lifting point for the container when the retaining pin is received in the interior groove.

  • Patent number: 5969436
Abstract: For use with a reserve battery couplable to a source of electrical power, a battery connect/disconnect circuit, including: (1) a switching subcircuit comprising a series-coupled controllable switch and diode and connected in electrical series with the reserve battery, the diode reverse-biased with respect the source of electrical power, (2) a contactor coupled in electrical parallel with the switching subcircuit and (3) a control circuit, coupled to the switching subcircuit and the contactor, that selectively closes the contactor to couple the reserve battery to the source of electrical power to charge the reserve battery.
