  • Publication number: 20040179247
Abstract: A digital copier and method of processing images in which the images are manipulated and processed utilizing smaller blocks of the image. By working with smaller blocks, the image processing may begin before an entire image is scanned or before the entire image is loaded into a memory or buffer. Further, when printing, the start of the printing process may begin as soon as a row of the smaller blocks is completed without waiting for the generation of the entire manipulated image. The blocks are preferably an integral multiple of the size of a size of a direct memory access buffer, or alternatively, are of a size which may be divided into the size of the direct memory access buffer an integral number of times or are a multiple of the size of the direct memory access buffer.

  • Patent number: 6304927
Abstract: A digital copier or multi-function device with a scalable architecture which provides for a reusability of the architecture and reduced cost of the system. The digital copier utilizes an industry standard bus such as the PCI bus for communicating image data. Further, the architecture does not require the tightly coupling of added software and hardware. Generally, the processor of the system has the capability to carry out the additional functions and the new software to carry out the added functions may be stored in a disk drive or other memory and executed by the processor. Thus, the added hardware can be controlled by the processor of the digital copier. The image is manipulated in smaller blocks by performing functions such as rotation of the image, flipping of the image, performing a logical function on two images, and repeating a section of the image. The manipulation of the data in blocks in conjunction with the flexible architecture provides for a high speed of copies by the digital copier.

  • Patent number: 6298404
Abstract: A digital copier or multifunction machine which has a unified memory structure so that a memory sub-system stores both computer instructions for controlling a processor within a digital copier and also image data to be printed, stored, or obtained from a scanner. The computer instructions and image data may be stored in the same semiconductor memory, if desired. Further, a single bus may be utilized to connect the memory sub-system to a memory controller which interfaces to the processor. In order to efficiently utilize a memory sub-system which stores both computer instructions and image data, a virtual memory control process may be utilized which efficiently pages the image data and/or computer instructions from a main memory to a mass storage device such as a hard disk drive.
