  • Publication number: 20040268207
Abstract: A rate-converting, low-latency, low power interleaver architecture is implemented using block read-write methods. The memory architecture is such that it allows multiple input bits to be written into memory simultaneously. In some embodiments, the number of simultaneous bits written into memory corresponds to an error encoding rate, such that an encoder and interleaver can operate within the same clock domain, regardless of the code rate. The memory architecture also allows an entire row of interleaved data to be read out in one clock cycle.

  • Patent number: 5336085
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing a selected atmosphere at and within an opening to the interior volume of a furnace. Two or more paralleled diffusers adjacent to the furnace opening laminarly emit different fluids and provide a multilayer fluid curtain over the opening. The curtain has a composite modified Froude number from 0.05 to 10, and a thickness at emission of at least 5% of its extent in the flow direction. Partially covering the outside of the curtain is an optional, substantially flat, outer shield with an aperture coinciding with the furnace opening, which reduces the necessary flow rates of fluids. Optional side shields around the sides of the curtain also reduce the necessary fluid flow. A preferred diffuser comprises a porous tube in a housing with an outlet directed to emit fluid across the furnace opening. The outlet is covered with a screen to disperse the fluid flow and to protect the porous tube.

  • Patent number: 5280586
Abstract: A communication system including one or more host adapters connected to a host computer, each adapter having multiple serial communication ports for transferring data between the computer and several TTY devices. Several of the adapter's serial ports include a high speed serial link for communicating with a data concentrator. The adapter automatically detects the presence of a concentrator connected to a switchable port and switches to the high speed link. Each concentrator includes multiple serial ports for communicating with TTY devices, and a high speed serial link for communicating with the adapter's high speed link. The concentrators allow more than one TTY device to share a single adapter serial port. Data from all of the TTY devices is accumulated into an adapter data buffer during a configurable time period or until a certain amount of data is accumulated, at which time the adapter interrupts the computer and transfers the accumulated data to the computer in one transfer operation.

  • Patent number: 5171511
Abstract: A tuyere and method for discharging an agitating gas into the molten contents of an electrically heated furnace to reduce temperature and composition variations in its contents. The tuyere comprises a refractory plug and sleeve for installation into the refractory wall and shell of the furnace, and a dielectric section in the tuyere pipe outside the furnace shell to prevent electrical arcing and current flow into the gas supply piping and external supports.

  • Patent number: 4741515
Abstract: Apparatus for introducing reactive and nonreactive gases through the refractory lining of a metallurgical vessel, such as bottom injection of such gases into a BOF to improve mixed blowing efficiency. The apparatus comprises one or more refractory blocks which may be set within a metal canister. The refractory blocks have a plurality of slots each containing one or more small diameter nonreactive metal tubes for conveying gases. The refractory block may also contain means for measuring the rate of wear of the refractory blocks in the canister.
