  • Patent number: 7504356
Abstract: A synthetic catalyst providing superoxide dismutase activity consists essentially of monodispersed nanoparticles of cerium oxide having a crystal lattice containing cerium in mixed valence states of Ce3+ and Ce4+ wherein the Ce4+ valence state predominates and containing an enhanced Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio and an effective number of oxygen vacancies in the crystal lattice so as to increase catalytic efficiency. A method of making the synthetic catalyst includes dissolving hydrous Ce(NO3)3 in water so as to form a solution, stirring the solution, adding hydrogen peroxide, heating and stopping when the solution develops a light yellow color.

  • Publication number: 20080311390
Abstract: A method for depositing sol-gel derived coatings on substrates to form coated substrates includes the steps of providing a first solution including at least one sol precursor and at least one solvent. A water comprising solution is added to the first solution to form a sol-gel. The sol-gel is deposited on a substrate. The sol-gel layer on the substrate is dried/cured at a temperature ?100° C. for at least 10 minutes to form a solid layer, wherein the solid layer has a thickness from 50 nm to 110 nm. The depositing and curing steps are repeated at least once until combined thickness of the solid layers forms a coating of a predetermined thickness. The resulting solid layers are low water content layers that can be evidenced by transmission measurements. The coated substrate can be an IR transmissive substrate having a recrystallization temperature <130° C.

  • Patent number: 7458384
Abstract: Nano-sized rare earth metal oxide particles are prepared from aqueous reverse micelles. The engineered nanoparticles have large surface area to volume ratios, and uniformly incorporate a surfactant in each particle, so that when applied to the inner surface of a pipeline or sprayed onto a fluid stream in a pipeline, the particles reduce the roughness of the inside surface of pipe being used to transport fluid. The application of a nanolayer of this novel nanoceria mixture causes a significant reduction in pressure drops, friction, and better recovery and yield of fluid flowing through a pipeline.

  • Patent number: 7438885
Abstract: A novel method for simultaneously forming and filling and decorating carbon nanotubes with palladium nanoparticles is disclosed. Synthesis involves preparing a palladium chloride (PdCl2) solution in a container, having two graphite electrodes, then immersing the graphite electrode assembly, into the PdCl2 solution; connecting the graphite electrodes to a direct current power supply; bringing the electrodes into contact with each other to strike an arc; separating the electrodes to sustain the arc inside the solution; putting the container with electrode assembly in a water-cooled bath; and collecting Pd-nanoparticles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotubes decorated with Pd-nanoparticles. The temperature at the site of the arc-discharge is greater than 3000° C. At these temperatures, the palladium is ionized into nanoparticles and the graphite electrodes generate layers of graphene (carbon), which roll away from the anode and encapsulate or entrap the Pd-nanoparticles.

  • Patent number: 7347987
Abstract: Methods and compositions useful for neuronal protection in retinal cells in vitro and the protection of mammalian cells from reactive oxygen species in vivo are provided. Ultrafine nano-size cerium oxide particles, less than 10 nanometers in diameter, have been provided to decrease reactive oxygen species (ROS) in retina tissue that generates large amounts of ROS. These reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in light-induced retina degeneration and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Cerium oxide nanoparticles have been used to promote the lifespan of retinal neurons and protect the neurons from apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide in vitro and in vivo. The neuronal protection in retinal cells is achieved by decreasing generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thus, cerium oxide particles are used to promote the longevity of retinal neurons in vitro and mammalian cells in vivo.

  • Publication number: 20080050307
Abstract: Novel, monodispersed, spherical ZrO2 particles in the size range of approximately 10 to approximately 600 nm exhibiting metastable tetragonal crystal structure at room temperature and novel methods of preparation. The ZrO2 particles are approximately 100% in the tetragonal phase at room temperature and can be pure and free of foreign oxides. The novel method can include mixing zirconium-alkoxide and an alcohol, forming preparation one, followed by separately dissolving completely de-ionized water and a polymeric steric stabilizer in an alcohol forming preparation two. Next the preparations can be mixed with vigorous stirring while subjecting the materials to hydrolysis and condensation reactions with very slow stirring. Next, there is waiting for the formation of a sol from the mixture, followed by drying at approximately 80 degrees C. to form resultant material followed by crushing the resultant material.

  • Publication number: 20070207325
Abstract: An infrared transmissive article includes an infrared transmissive substrate and a single layer anti-reflective (AR) composite broadband sol gel coating on a surface of the substrate. The AR coating includes a first chalcogenide including compound, and a second chalcogenide including compound intermixed with the first chalcogenide including compound. The percentages of the first chalcogenide and the second chalcogenide in the AR coating are selected to provide a refractive index of the AR coating that approximates the square root of a refractive index of the substrate.

  • Publication number: 20070123996
Abstract: A biocompatible composite includes a solid biocompatible material and stem cells attached thereto. The biocomposite provides a stable interface with endogenous tissue and the implanted composition resulting in accelerated repair to damaged bones and tissues. A method of repairing bone includes the steps of obtaining live stem cells from a patient to be treated or a haplotype matched donor and culturing the stem cells with a biocompatible material. The stem cells attach to a surface of the biocompatible material to form a biocompatible composite. The biocompatible composite is positioned in proximity to bone to be treated, wherein said stem cell provides an interface between the biocompatible material, thus allowing the stem cells provided by the biocomposite to accelerate healing of the bone.

  • Publication number: 20050129868
Abstract: A method of depositing a zirconia-based ceramic coating (24) using a low velocity oxy-fuel (LVOF) process. Particles of zirconia (14) are mixed with second constituent particles (16) of a material having a melting temperature sufficiently low to be successfully deposited by an LVOF process. The second constituent particles may have a coefficient of thermal expansion within 30% of that of the zirconia particles, and/or they may have a thermal conductivity less than or no more than 20% higher that that of the zirconia particles. The second constituent particles may include calcium titanate, strontium titanate or sodium-zirconium-phosphate-silicate (NZPS). The capability to deposit the zirconia-containing particle mix with an LVOF process facilitates the in-situ repair of a component having a damaged zirconia-based thermal barrier coating.
