Patent number: 11717791Abstract: Two-dimensional material based filters, their method of manufacture, and their use are disclosed. In one embodiment, a membrane may include an active layer including a plurality of defects and a deposited material associated with the plurality of defects may reduce flow therethrough. Additionally, a majority of the active layer may be free from the material. In another embodiment, a membrane may include a porous substrate and an atomic layer deposited material disposed on a surface of the porous substrate. The atomic layer deposited material may be less hydrophilic than the porous substrate and an atomically thin active layer may be disposed on the atomic layer deposited material.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 2020Date of Patent: August 8, 2023Assignees: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, King Fahd University of Petroleum & MineralsInventors: Rohit N. Karnik, Suman Bose, Michael S. H. Boutilier, Nicolas G. Hadjiconstantinou, Tarun Kumar Jain, Sean C. O'Hern, Tahar Laoui, Muataz A. Atieh, Doojoon Jang

Publication number: 20230017523Abstract: A bioelectronic device houses therapeutic cells and is configured to be implanted in a host. The device includes an electrochemical cell that produces oxygen gas from water when a voltage is applied. The oxygen gas produced by the electrochemical cell is stored in a gas diffusion chamber in the device. The therapeutic cells in a cell housing chamber in the device receive oxygen gas from the gas diffusion chamber to help keep the cells alive and functioning when the device is implanted in a low oxygen environment. The device receives power wirelessly.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2022Publication date: January 19, 2023Inventors: Siddharth Krishnan, Suman Bose, Nima Khatib, Matthew Bochenek, Robert S. LANGER, Daniel Anderson

Publication number: 20180353650Abstract: Macrodevices containing a micro-fabricated body having at least one or multiple compartments and a porous membrane, methods of making and using thereof, are described. The one or multiple compartments encapsulate one or more cells that secrete a therapeutic agent in cell-based therapy. The porous membrane provides immunoprotection the encapsulated cells. Further, the surface of the macrodevices is chemically modified using polymers and/or small molecules, reducing fibrosis of the macrodevices, thereby allowing in vivo delivery of the secreted therapeutic agents for extended periods of time.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 13, 2018Publication date: December 13, 2018Inventors: Suman Bose, Volkan Yesilyurt, Lisa Rae Volpatti, Robert S.
