Patent number: 11274617Abstract: A system includes an engine adapted to output a torque, a parasitic load adapted to receive a portion of the torque from the engine, and a controller communicably coupled to the parasitic load. The controller is configured to determine an actual exhaust temperature value of an exhaust gas flow exiting the engine and a minimum fuel amount to be injected into the engine. The controller is configured to compare the actual exhaust temperature value with an exhaust temperature threshold value of the exhaust gas flow to determine a first difference between the actual exhaust temperature value and the exhaust temperature threshold value. The controller is configured to determine a target torque output of the engine based on the first difference and the minimum fuel amount. The controller is configured to cause the torque to be increased to attain the target torque output using the parasitic load.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2020Date of Patent: March 15, 2022Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Suman Goli, Andrew Nathan Schifferer, Kirk Anderson, Patrick William Sullivan, Jr., Ryan Robert Stoffel, Phillip Alvin Hartz

Patent number: 10059341Abstract: A control system for a powertrain system includes an electronic control unit structured to receive ground speed data and load factor data. The electronic control unit determines an engine speed command to an engine and a torque command to a variable-torque transmission based upon an engine speed limit and a torque scale factor that can vary with ground speed and load factor. The commands produce an economy output of the powertrain to reduce fuel consumption.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2016Date of Patent: August 28, 2018Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Jeremy Sharp, Suman Goli, Mark Rettig

Patent number: 10029694Abstract: A control system for a powertrain in a machine includes a first sensor which generates a first signal indicative of a ground speed of the machine. The control system includes a second sensor which generates a second signal indicative of a load of an engine in the powertrain. The control system includes a third sensor which generates a third signal indicative of an operational state of the machine. The control system includes an input device which enables an operator to generate a request for a powertrain output. The control system further includes a controller in communication with the first sensor, the second sensor, the third sensor and the input device. The controller determines an engine speed command and a transmission output torque command to produce a powertrain output based at least on the first signal, the second signal and the third signal in response to the requested powertrain output.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2016Date of Patent: July 24, 2018Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Jeremy Sharp, Suman Goli, Mark E Rettig
