  • Patent number: 5654266
Abstract: A composition composing ketone bodies and/or precursors thereof and an aqueous phosphate-buffered balanced salt solution with citrate, HPO.sub.4.sup.-2 and Ca.sup.2+ in a defined concentration ratio, and methods, including a mechanism and an associated set of protocols, to make the solution without causing autoclave-elicited caramelization and precipitation in the manufacturing process are disclosed. The disclosed composition is particularly useful as a rich energy source for isolated tissue and for peripheral tissues under surgery with concurrent suppression of lactic acid formation and accumulation in the cells. It may be used in ocular surgery and surgeries in general, although other uses, for example, topical application and storage and rinsing of donor tissues prior to transplantation are also contemplated.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 28, 1994
Date of Patent: August 5, 1997
Inventors: Chung-Ho Chen, Sumi C. Chen
  • Patent number: 5298487

  • Patent number: 5073492
Abstract: A method for synergistically enhancing endothelial cell growth in an appropriate environment therefor which comprises adding to the environment, VEGF, effectors and serum-derived factor. A formulation for synergistically enhancing endothelial cell growth comprising VEGF, uridine, thymidine and serum-derived factor is also disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 9, 1987

  • Patent number: 4873186
Abstract: A storage medium for isolated donor corneas comprising at least one compound capable of inhibiting corneal lactate production. The addition of a short chain fatty acid and/or a ketone body and precursors provides isolated corneas with an efficient fuel source and concurrently inhibits corneal lactate formation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 2, 1987
Date of Patent: October 10, 1989
    Assignee: The Johns Hopkins University
Inventors: Chung-Ho Chen, Sumi C. Chen
  • Patent number: 4844242
Abstract: A device for storing isolated donor corneas comprising a medium container for containing corneal storage medium, a cap which co-acts with the medium container to form an airtight seal, and a cornea retaining means attached to the cap for retaining a cornea suspended within the medium container and for preventing the retained cornea from a contacting inner surfaces of the container and cap.
