    Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for performing device-to-device communication in a wireless communication system. The method includes generating identification information of a D2D user equipment that supports the D2D communication as identification information for D2D discovery using a hash function, the identification information for discovery includes information of a first length for indicating a division region of the beacon signals and information of a second length included in the beacon. The information of a first length and the information of a second length are smaller than identification information of the D2D user equipment. Accordingly, by performing discovery for the D2D user equipment through the identification information having shorter length than prior art, and performing discovery in a range where the discovery is available through the region in which the beacon signals are allocated, advantages of performing the D2D discovery effectively are provided.

The power saving method includes grouping the access points into at least one paging group with a paging group boundary; determining if the a mobile station is in the idle mode in which the mobile station switches between an awake state and a doze state every predetermined time interval, or the active mode in which the mobile station is in the awake mode; and if the mobile station is in the idle mode enabling an idle handoff which occurs only when the mobile station crosses the paging group boundary. In the present invention, the handoff occurs when the mobile terminal crosses the paging group boundary but not the access point cell in the idle mode, resulting in reduction of power consumption.

The receiving station extracts a transmission data rate from an incoming signal, determines a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the incoming signal, and then calculates noise margin information based on a difference between the SNR of the incoming signal and a minimum SNRMIN for the extracted data rate. The noise margin is then transmitted back to the original transmitting station and using the noise margin information, the transmit power level and/or the transmission rate of this station may be adjusted accordingly.
