An indication to create a virtual machine on the host device is received at a host device of a plurality of host devices. A MAC address to assign to the virtual machine is identified, and a message is transmitted to at least one of the plurality of host devices, with the message including the identified MAC address. The MAC address is assigned to the virtual machine in the absence of a response from the at least one of the plurality of host devices indicating a potential conflict with the MAC address.
