Patent number: 9948711Abstract: A method, executed by a computer, for allocating resources includes assigning resiliency attributes to a server having a workload, linking each server to a partner resource, duplicating the workload of each server in an offsite location accessible to the partner resource, detecting a disaster event, and transferring the workload of the server automatically to the partner resource. In some embodiments, the partner resource is a plurality of pool servers. The partner resource may be calculated by performing a capacity analysis. The partner resource may not a specifically assigned resource until a disaster occurs. In some embodiments, the workload is duplicated such that the recovery point objective of the workload is minimized. A computer program product and computer system corresponding to the methods are also disclosed herein.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2015Date of Patent: April 17, 2018Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Josep Cors, Naresh Nayar, Birgit M. Pfitzmann, Suraj Subramanian, Gerhard A. Widmayer

Patent number: 9935824Abstract: In an approach for provisioning a server utilizing a virtual consistency group, a processor receives a request to provision a first server utilizing a first application consistency group, wherein the first application consistency group is a virtualized consistency group. A processor defines a storage consistency group. A processor assigns the first application consistency group to the storage consistency group. A processor provisions the first server. A processor assigns to the provisioned first server, storage specified by the first application consistency group.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2015Date of Patent: April 3, 2018Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Josep Cors, Naresh Nayar, Suraj Subramanian, Oliver M. Publication number: 20180054352Abstract: A service catalog may be stored on a storage device and represent systems management tools with types, managed component types the systems management tools can manage, and dependencies associated with the systems management tools. A portal comprises a user interface receiving a request for a systems management tool from the service catalog. A configuration management database stores registered state of the systems management tools and the managed components managed by the systems management tools. An orchestration component is capable of coupling a computer-executable plugin to activate, deactivate, and run the systems management tool on a managed component.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 19, 2016Publication date: February 22, 2018Inventors: Thomas E. Chefalas, Florian D. Graf, Andrzej Kochut, Birgit M. Pfitzmann, Suraj Subramanian, Mahesh Viswanathan

Patent number: 9104463Abstract: Automated deactivation of service to enable effective resource reusability in a computing system, may include receiving a request to destroy a virtual machine, the virtual machine running in a virtual data center comprising one or more software components allocated for servicing a customer. In response, a provisioning module may be notified to remove the virtual machine. Based on the number of resources determined to be left as available, deactivation of pending actions on the virtual machine may be performed at the time the virtual machine is being removed or as an automatic scheduled job to be performed at a scheduled time.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2012Date of Patent: August 11, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Ruchi Mahindru, Suraj Subramanian, Mahesh Viswanathan

Patent number: 8997245Abstract: Systems and techniques for managing software licensing are described. When a computing system service request is made, the request is intercepted and software information that may be more or less continuously updated in a managed computing environment is examined to determine the effect of the service request on software usage by the system. The software usage represented by the service request is evaluated based on licensing information to determine license usage by the system and changes in license usage based on the service request, and license usage information is determined based on the software usage and the licensing information. The license usage information may be used in connection with a system of rules to govern actions such as reporting licensing usage or allowing or preventing the use of software based on whether use of the software will violate licensing requirements.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2013Date of Patent: March 31, 2015Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Han Chen, Minkyong Kim, Hui Lei, Jonathan P. Munson, Suraj Subramanian
