    Abstract: An arc discharge lamp (60) contains an arc tube (62) containing an arc generating and sustaining medium. The arc tube (62) has at least one press seal (64). Means (66) for coupling electrical energy to the interior of the arc tube includes an electrical current-carrying frame member (68) and in-leads (68a) and (68b) sealed into the lamp stem (90) and connected to a base (not shown). A starting source (70) comprises a sealed cavity (72) formed in the press seal (64). A second fill material is contained within the sealed cavity (72). The starting source (70) emits ultraviolet radiation when the lamp (60) is energized, which assists in initiation of the arc discharge within the interior of the arc tube (62). An electrical energy coupler (74) is provided for coupling electrical energy to the sealed cavity (72).

    Abstract: Superior color stability in a miniature HID lamp can be achieved by reducing the size of the lamp, reducing the mercury concentration, reducing the salt concentration and increasing the heat to the lamp seal. In general the result concentrates the salts in the central, lower section of the lamp envelope and displaces them from the hot spot and electrode roots were deleterious chemical reactions can occur that are believed to subsequently reduce lamp performance.

    Abstract: A compact fused silica, electroded HID lamp for automotive forward lighting, which contains no mercury. The lamps voltage, approximately 40 volts, is developed in this lamp by vaporizing zinc iodide instead of mercury. A compromise between voltage and luminous flux is achieved through the choice of the sodium scandium (Na:Sc) molar ratio, between 4.5:1 and 6:1 and a zinc iodide (ZnI2) dose of 2 to 6 micrograms per cubic millimeter that permits the lamp to operate within the North America, European and Japanese automotive color specifications for white light. The voltage in the lamp can be controlled according to the zinc iodide doping level without seriously impacting the visible spectrum otherwise provided by the other known dopants in the lamp.

    Abstract: The invention involves application of a luster coating to the exterior of a glass lamp capsule envelope to obtain a blue coloration of the transmitted light. The result is a higher color temperature light source that is commercially preferred. The preferred blue luster is formed from a coating solution containing organometallic components and solvent, that is heat treated in an oxidizing atmosphere to form a gold containing bismuth-titanium oxide material. The filament is adjusted to yield the overall necessary number of lumens. The blue luster tinted automobile lamp capsule is a durable, and yields the proper number of lumens with little or no increase in glare. The blue luster tinted lamp capsule is therefore compliant with legal standards.
