    Abstract: Genetically engineered nucleic acid molecules encoding phiC31-integrase are described. These nucleic acid molecules, referred to as C31-Int genes, comprise sequences optimized for expression in eukaryotic host cells. Vectors, microorganisms, vertebrate cells, and transgenic organisms comprising optimized C31-Int genes are also described. PhiC31 integrase proteins encoded by the optimized C31-Int genes, as well as methods of recombining a DNA molecules containing phiC31 integrase recognition sequences are provided.
