  • Patent number: 7115676
Abstract: Adhesive compositions are disclosed which cure rapidly and completely on confinement between passive substrates, such as magnesium alloys, that are deficient in transition metals and transition metal ions. The compositions include one or more acrylate resins, one or more peroxy free radical initiators, one or more onium salts, and an accelerator such as acetylphenyl hydrazine desirably in an amount of about 1.0% or less by weight of the composition. These compositions provide exceptional bonding to such substrates without the need for a transition metal primer. Methods of making and using such compositions are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20050101689
Abstract: Adhesive compositions are disclosed which include acrylates, their polymers, and free radical initiators. The compositions include a multi-functional alpha-alkoxyalkyl(meth)acrylate compound and a free radical initiator. The multi-functional alpha-alkoxyalkyl(meth)acrylate compound is the reaction product of: (a) a (meth)acrylic acid or a (meth)acrylate ester having a free carboxylic acid group; and (b) a compound including two or more 1-alkenyl ether groups and free of acetal and ketal groups, or a compound free of acetal and ketal groups and including one or more 1-alkenyl ether groups and a (meth)acrylate group. The compositions are easier and less expensive to prepare than conventional acrylate compositions and degrade when contacted with an acid medium or when heated. The compositions are useful in a wide range of applications and are compatible with conventional adhesive additives.

  • Patent number: 6822052
Abstract: A toughened cyanoacrylate adhesive composition including a cyanoacrylate monomer and an elastomeric copolymer soluble in the monomer, the copolymer being the reaction product of an olefin C2-20 and a (meth)acrylate ester. The invention further discloses novel elastomeric copolymers which do not contain additives or functional groups which can interfere with the cure rate or stability of the adhesive composition in which they are included. Benefits of the copolymers include improved toughness of the cured adhesive composition as measured by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis.

  • Patent number: 6231714
Abstract: Curable compositions include at least one monomer compound having both (meth)acrylic ester functionality and an allylic phenyl ether functional group on the same molecule, the allylic phenyl ether functional group having at least one unsubstituted position on the phenyl ring which is ortho or para to the allylic ether group, and a free radical catalyst system. The composition may also includes a latent thermally activated acid generator. Claisen Rearrangement of radically polymerized polymers produced from the compositions may be induced at temperatures of about 100° C. or more to give crosslinked products of improved thermal resistance.
