    Abstract: This invention is directed toward a method of preventing the formation of bioactive substances in a pathogen inactivated blood component. The steps include illuminating the blood component with light at a sufficient energy so that an alloxazine photosensitizer present in the blood component may be photolyzed to inactivate any pathogens which may be present; preventing the formation of bioactive substances in the pathogen inactivated blood component; and storing the pathogen inactivated blood component.
