  • Patent number: 4843816
Abstract: At a low part load, and at idling of a vehicle machinery it is difficult to obtain a good fuel economy and acceptable emission rates. The amount of work for driving the compressor and the auxiliary apparatuses is considerable in a gas turbine, and in view of the conditions mentioned the combustor of the gas turbine is provided with two burners, of which one is dimensioned for a fuel quantity which merely corresponds to "spare-flame" operation. An auxiliary motor means is included in the machinery and keeps, together with the "spare-flame" operation. An auxiliary motor means is included in the machinery and keeps, together with the "spare-flame" burner, the main rotor of the gas turbine running at idling and part-load. The auxiliary motor may be an electric motor, a pressure fluid motor, or a combustion engine. The compressor is provided with means for throttling the flow of air, and a control device operates this throttling means so it is effective during "spare-flame" operation.

  • Patent number: 4474007
Abstract: Outlet and inlet conduits of an internal combustion engine are united in, and carry a housing enclosing a rotor spool having one turbine and one compressor wheel. A cavity in the housing, the longitudinal axis of which is substantially parallel to a middle plane through the row of engine cylinders is adapted to receive the casing of the turbocharger, and may be designed in such a manner that the casing may be slid into the housing in the axial directions, without the housing having to be removed from the engine. Alternatively, the outlet and the inlet conduits may each, per se, be collected and form one half of the housing. The halves are brought together over the rotor spool, from both ends thereof. Resilient sealing members are preferably fitted between the two halves of the housing. A second exhaust gas turbine may be connected to the exhaust conduit from the supercharger, and may be adapted to drive at the power take-off shaft of the engine, or to drive some auxiliary.

  • Patent number: 4183209
Abstract: In a gas turbine power plant including a separate power turbine, a guide apparatus located downstream of the power turbine rotor will have to cope with gas flows varying considerably with respect to velocity and inlet direction. To provide improved flow handling properties the individual vanes of the guide apparatus are divided, and comprise a stationary portion extending over the full axial depth of the vane, and a smaller portion, including part of the thicker nose of the vane only. This smaller portion is displaceable in relation to the stationary portion, so the vane, when its portions are brought together, presents a rounded front edge, and, in the displaced position of the portions, presents a sharp front edge.

  • Patent number: 4118927
Abstract: An automotive power plant includes three turbine rotors, of which one forms a spool together with the compressor, and the other two rotors are interconnected by a gearing. The first turbine rotor is undersized, and cannot provide the necessary power for driving the compressor at full load, although the spool does not have to drive any internal auxiliaries. A slim shaft, carried in air bearings and rotating at supercritical speed, also when the plant is idling, transfers power from the gearing to the compressor spool. The turbine casing is die-cast of a light metal alloy, and is internally clad with pre-formed ceramic insulation components, bonded to the metal walls. In a front drive vehicle the casing is mounted in arcuate guides having their centers at the vehicle wheel axles, whereby the casing may be swung about 90.degree., when the gas turbine is to be serviced.
