    Abstract: Methods of characterizing the self-healing properties of a set cement based material in contact with hydrocarbons in an oil- and/or gas-well are described. The methods comprise: providing a test cell (10); providing said test cell (10) with a sample (31, 40) of the set cement based material; damaging the sample to simulate a loss of zonal isolation resulting from damages made to the set cement based material in the oil- or gas-well; injecting a hydrocarbon fluid in the test cell; allowing the cement based material to heal by itself; measuring the differential pressure (?P) across the sample (31, 40); and characterizing the self-healing properties of the cement based material from the measure of said differential pressure (?P).

    Abstract: A self-healing cement system includes cement, water and at least one additive that swells in contact with water from reservoir or from formation in the case of a structural failure in the set cement to provide a physical barrier in the zone of failure. Examples of such material include particles of super-absorbent polymer. These additives have the effect of making the cement self-healing in the event of physical failure or damage such as micro-annuli. The self healing property is produced by the contact of the water itself, the potential repair mechanism is thus activated if and when needed in case of start of loss of zonal isolation. Several super-absorbent polymers have been identified such as polyacrylamide, modified crosslinked poly(meth)acrylate and non-soluble acrylic polymers.

    Abstract: A composition for repairing voids or cracks in a cement sheath or plug comprises an aqueous epoxy resin, a hardener, an alkali-swellable material and an aqueous carrier fluid. The particle size of the alkali-swellable material is preferably smaller than 200 nanometers, thereby allowing the composition to penetrate cracks as small as 60 micrometers. A method for repairing voids or cracks in a cement sheath, thereby restoring zonal isolation, comprises preparing the composition, injecting the composition into voids or cracks in a cement sheath or plug and allowing the composition to viscosify and harden.
