    Abstract: A defocused laser beam provides an efficient mechanism to remove a coating from a substrate without requiring additional cleaning steps. A defocused laser beam is applied to the coating so that a focal point of the laser beam does not spatially coincide with the coating. A target portion of the coating is removed by applying sufficient power from the laser beam to ablate the material of the target portion and expose a portion of the substrate underlying the target portion.
