  • Patent number: 5303361
Abstract: A text search and retrieval system which builds an index representing every word in stored files created by a variety of applications, searches for requested words using the index and ranks the files based on the relative strength of match with the search request. From a display of the ranked filenames, the user can select a file, whereupon the file is tested to determine which one of a plurality of file viewers to deploy. The corresponding viewer is automatically loaded and used to display consecutive screens of information from the selected file. Further searching within the file is accomplished within the context of the viewer by matching character strings of a new search request with words in the items of the file produced by the viewer. To work on a file in view, the user can invoke the software application which created the file by loading the application corresponding to the viewer along with the desired file, without abandoning the search system.

  • Patent number: 5145702
Abstract: Water-dispersible microparticles of hydrophobic, water-insoluble, non-denatured protein, and method for preparing a suspension of these microparticles by the controlled precipitation of the protein, is described. The suspension can be used as a substitute for most dietary fats, or to encapsulate selected molecules. The water-insoluble proteins used in the process can be chemically or enzymatically modified to enhance the properties of the microparticles.

  • Patent number: 5057772
Abstract: A system (100) performs concurrent testing and lead verification of an electronic component (104) having two leads (126 and 128). The system includes circuitry (114 and 116) for determining a sum of amounts of contact resistances between first (132) and second (134) probes and one of the leads by producing a current (I.sub.1) that propagates through the first probe, the lead of the component, and the second probe. The sum of the contact resistances is proportional to the difference in voltage between the leads. If the difference exceeds a limit, then the sum of the amount of contact resistances is excessive. The system also includes circuitry (110) for determining a value of a parameter of the component while the sum of the amounts of contact resistances is being determined. The circuit for determining the sum of the contract resistances and the circuitry for determining the value of the parameter are electrically isolated from each other so that they do not influence each other.

  • Patent number: 4873359
Abstract: Synthesis of phenylserine ester (a) via benzaldehyde and glycine ester using serine hydroxymethyltransferase; and (b) via methyl benzoylacetate. Synthesis of hydroxy-aspartame or derivative by enzymatic coupling of phenylserine or derivative with aspartic acid or derivative. Hydrogenation of the coupled product to give as final product aspartame or analog with related processes and products.

  • Patent number: 4825852
Abstract: A continuous passive motion device comprises a base and femoral and tibial supports which rotate about a first pivot point located at the knee, the femoral support also rotating about a pivot point which comprises an extension of the base and is located adjacent the patient's hip. The motor is located in the base beyond the end of the travel of drive rods which extend from the base to the tibial support. The motor drives the foot of these rods forward and backward along the base. The drive rods move from a nearly horizontal positon relative to the base up to a vertical positon and past this vertical position. A camming mechanism is provided coupling the upper end of the drive rods to the tibial support, the camming mechanism being engaged when the drive rods are nearly vertical, to provide additional rotational force to the tibial support which is conveyed to the knee joint. In this way, a powerful bending force is conveyed to the knee, to thereby provide the necessary rehabilitating force to the knee joint.

  • Patent number: 4788538
Abstract: The present invention provides apparatus and methods for determining the boundaries of arbitrarily shaped regions on a computer display system having a central processing unit (CPU). The CPU is coupled to a display having a plurality of selectively enabled and disabled display elements arranged in a matrix, whereby each display element is identified by a unique X,Y address. A memory coupled to the CPU includes a plurality of memory cells, wherein the cells correspond to a display element on the display. An initial X,Y address is selected on the display by a user employing a cursor control to identify an area on the display where the boundaries of a region are to be determined. The initial X,Y address selected by the user is defined as a seed cell.
