  • Patent number: 5177488
Abstract: A programmable fiber optic delay system employs multiple programmable fiber optic delay lines, and switches among the delay lines for inclusion in an overall delay path. Switching among the delay lines is coordinated with the programming of those lines so that only a delay line with a settled delay program is included in the overall delay path. Each delay line consists of a plurality of fiber optic segments of varying length. The line's delay is programmed by switching in particular segments whose aggregate lengths correspond to a desired delay period. The multiple delay lines are used to simulate target speed and distance for use in testing a radar system. The programming of each individual delay line and the switching between lines is preferably controlled by a computer resident in the target simulator.

  • Patent number: 5051793
Abstract: A flash EPROM cell is fabricated using a standard two polysilicon enhancement mode n-channel transistor process. An active transistor region is formed in a silicon substrate by growing a field oxide around the region. A first polysilicon layer is deposited, etched, and oxidized to form an insulated control gate electrode. A second polysilicon layer is deposited over the active transistor region and the control gate electrode and then anisotropically etched to remove all of the second polysilicon material except for a filament adjacent to the control gate electrode. The filament can be on one side of the control gate electrode or on opposing sides of the control gate electrode. Source and drain regions are formed in the active transistor region with the control gate electrode and the floating gate electrode positioned over the channel region interconnecting the source and drain regions.

  • Patent number: 5039462
Abstract: This invention provides a process for producing biaxially oriented polymer sheet. This process includes the steps of introducing a polymer slab into a deformation zone defined between working surfaces of a set of working tools including a first working tool and an opposed second working tool. The polymer slab is worked in the deformation zone to reduce slab gauge, during which the polymer material being worked flows bi-directionally while the material is not restricted in the lateral direction to produce biaxially oriented polymer sheet. At least the portion of the slab being worked is at a temperature above the glass transition temperature and below the melting temperature of the polymer material. The working surface of at least one working tool in the deformation zone is ultrasonically excited during working of the polymer slab.

  • Patent number: 4838281
Abstract: A linear suction control system 10 includes a linear solenoid valve 11 which exhibits a flow through rate having a known proportional relationship with the current through the solenoid 30. Regulated fluid pressure 12 is fed through the linear solenoid valve 11 to a venturi-type pressure vacuum converter 17. The resulting vacuum is proportional to the flow rate through the valve 11 and thus to the current through the solenoid 30. A transducer 16 samples the vacuum output and produces a signal fed to a differential amplifier 17. The signal is compared in negative feedback fashion with a variable input voltage set by a potentiometer 18 or other variable voltage source, so that the transducer signal tracks the voltage source signal. The voltage source can comprise a potentiometer 18 actuated by a foot switch 19 or the like, so that angular position of the foot switch 19 relates directly and predictably to the vacuum output of the converter 13.

  • Patent number: 4803049
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for remotely monitoring pH. A support material is provided on which organic dye molecules are covalently attached at a surface density falling within a predetermined range. The pH dependent fluorescence response of the bound organic dye molecules depends critically on surface density of the organic dye molecules bound to the support material and the nature of the covalent linkage betwen the organic dye molecules and the support material. The invention is operated by contacting the support material on which the organic dye is attached with the fluid whose pH is to be determined. When in contact, the organic dye on the support material is illuminated so that it is caused to fluoresce. The intensity of organic dye fluorescence is then related to pH.

  • Patent number: 4770486
Abstract: There is disclosed a receptacle for a plug on the end of a fiber optic light guide probe used for projecting light into an area in which a surgeon is operating, said receptacle serving to prevent heat transfer from light source to the plug of said probe. A shoulder in the bore of the receptacle engages another shoulder on the plug with minimal area of contact to minimize the area of potential heat transfer. The dimensions of the central bore of the receptacle relative to the plug are such that an air gap exists all around the plug when inserted in the receptacle. The plug is provided with an insulating sleeve behind the plug shoulder, and this sleeve is mechanically supported by a Delrin plate and insert which give the system mechanical support and which minimizes heat transfer between the mechanical support of the receptacle and the plug because of the poor heat conductivity of plastic.
