  • Patent number: 11937174
Abstract: An access point provides a hidden wireless network that is configured with a set of SSIDs so that the hidden network is discoverable with multiple different SSIDs. Based on detection of a probe request frame which indicates an SSID from a device, the access point determines if the SSID for which network availability is requested matches one of the SSIDs in the set. If the SSID does match one of those included in the set, the SSID correctly identifies the hidden network, and the access point responds with a probe response frame. Devices connected to the hidden network may have initiated the establishment of the connection with a different SSIDs despite the hidden network being a single wireless network. Scaling the number of supported SSIDs therefore does not impact the frequency with which the access point transmits beacon frames for the hidden network.

  • Publication number: 20230319693
Abstract: Network side beacon reports (NSBRs) may be generated based on probe signals received from one or more client devices (CDs) in a wireless network. Once enabled, an NSBR mode is configured to generate NSBRs remotely from a CD. When in the NSBR mode, an NSBR may be generated based on compiled probe signal parameters associated with one or more probe signals received from the CD.

  • Publication number: 20230247422
Abstract: An access point service configures and manages a multi-enterprise wireless network in public settings. During network profile setup for a client connecting to an enterprise-issued access point (e.g., in a home environment), the service determines network information unique to the client and an authentication server associated with the enterprise to which the client is to authenticate for 802.1X authentication and stores the client network information and an indication of the authentication server in a cloud database. For access points in a public setting, upon detection of an association request by a client, the service determines network information that identifies the client and performs a lookup of the cloud database with the network information to determine to which of the recognized authentication servers to forward authentication messages transmitted by the client. If the result of the lookup does not indicate an authentication server, the connection is terminated.

  • Publication number: 20230180099
Abstract: A network device with wireless access point capabilities selectively captures PDUs detected on an instrumented interface(s) to capture those of one or more types/subtypes “of interest.” PDU types/subtypes that network device interface(s) has been instrumented to treat as “of interest” include those transmitted during a device's initial network activity during startup or attempted establishment of a wireless network connection. The interface(s) instrumented for targeted PDU capture can include wireless and/or wired (e.g., Ethernet) interfaces that are received on raw sockets so that each header type of a captured PDU is written to the PDU capture file. Prior to upload of a PDU capture file to a system from which it can be retrieved for analysis, the network device adds network metadata to the file based on context of the environment in which the network device operates. The network metadata can include IP address and/or network topology information determined at runtime.

  • Publication number: 20230179985
Abstract: A network device via which wireless clients can connect to a wireless network selectively captures PDUs detected on an instrumented interface(s) to capture those of one or more types/subtypes “of interest.” PDU types/subtypes that network device interface(s) has been instrumented to treat as “of interest” include those that are indicative of Wi-Fi roaming of a wireless client. The network device also calculates estimated throughput of the wireless network corresponding to the network device based on network statistics that it determines at fixed time increments and records throughput values in a pre-allocated buffer. When the network device detects a PDU(s) designated for capturing, it reads throughput values recorded in the buffer and writes these throughput values to the PDU capture file in addition to the captured PDU(s). Network support professionals can evaluate the throughput values reported in an uploaded PDU capture file to diagnose network issues attributable to roaming.

  • Patent number: 11197197
Abstract: During operation, an access point receives a message a message from a second access point with second information specifying loading of the second access point. Then, the access point receives a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) request from an electronic device with an Internet protocol (IP) address of the access point and a media access control (MAC) address of the electronic device. Next, the access point determines, based at least in part on information specifying loading of the access point, the second information and the MAC address, an assigned IP address of a gateway for the electronic device to access a second network, where the assigned IP address is one of: the IP address of the access point, or a second IP address of the second access point. Moreover, the access point provides a DHCP response to the electronic device with the assigned IP address.

  • Patent number: 10715438
Abstract: An access point that provides link aggregation is described. During operation, this access point receives a message that may include a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) response with an Internet protocol (IP) address of a gateway for an electronic device to access a network and a media access control (MAC) address of the electronic device. Based on the MAC address and/or at least a characteristic of the electronic device (such as a configuration, a capability and/or an operating system of the electronic device), the access point may determine a different IP address of another gateway for the electronic device to access the network. Moreover, the access point may modify the DHCP response by substituting the IP address of the other gateway for the IP address of gateway in a modified DHCP response. Next, the access point provides the modified DHCP response to the electronic device.
