  • Patent number: 10447169
Abstract: A system for providing power to a power grid includes a generator configured to output a first voltage associated with a first set of power characteristics. The system includes a power conversion system including a rectifier configured to convert first voltage to a direct current (DC) voltage. The power conversion system includes an inverter comprising one or more switches configured to convert the DC voltage to a second voltage. The system includes a processor configured to receive a second set of power characteristics associated with a power grid. The processor is configured to determine one or more signals configured to cause the switches in the inverter to convert the DC voltage into the second voltage, wherein the second voltage comprises the second set of power characteristics. The processor is configured to send the signals to the switches.

  • Patent number: 10181728
Abstract: A control system includes memory storing instructions and a processor configured to execute the instructions. The processor is configured to receive a first indication of a power grid voltage, receive a second indication of a power grid phase angle, receive a third indication of a generator voltage of power provided by a generator, and receive a fourth indication of a generator phase angle of power provided by the generator. The processor is configured to determine a voltage gap between the generator voltage and the power grid voltage and a time difference between the generator phase angle and the power grid phase angle. The processor is configured to generate a signal to cause the generator voltage and the generator phase angle to synchronize with the power grid voltage and the power grid phase angle, respectively.

  • Publication number: 20180337622
Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure relate to transient event mitigating systems and methods that can be incorporated into a power generation system. The power generation system can include an exciter coupled to an alternating current (AC) generator that provides electric power to power lines. The transient event mitigating system can include an automatic voltage regulator that detects a transient event in one or more of the power lines and configures a power converter to respond to the transient event by increasing an amount of direct current (DC) voltage coupled into the power converter. The power converter can provide the increased DC voltage to an exciter coil of the exciter for a transitory period of time in order to adjust the electric power generated by the AC generator and mitigate adverse effects of the transient event.

  • Publication number: 20180123346
Abstract: Methods and systems for stabilizing a power system include receiving a set point for a power system that includes the compensation circuitry controlled by the control system. A firing angle for the power system is set based at least in part on the set point. An angle between a generator terminal of a generator of the power system and a bus of the power system is calculated. A determination is made whether the angle is within a threshold value of the firing angle. When the angle is not within the threshold value of the firing angle, compensation circuitry is engaged to stabilize the power system.
