  • Publication number: 20020126161
Abstract: An information processing system includes a desk with a planar display unit which also accommodates physical objects to be manipulated by the operator. The physical objects are representative of physical objects normally used in office environments when handling paper files. A camera is provided which continuously monitors the desk display surface and is coupled to an electronic computer which can be controlled by the operator by moving the physical objects and the operator hands to simulate paper processing tasks, such as mailing, faxing, filing, opening files, editing and the like. • Patent number: 5999877
Abstract: A traffic flow monitor apparatus which can monitor a traffic flow at high precision over a wide range from the position near a TV camera to the distant position regardless of traffic conditions. An image analysis area crossing a road of an overlooked road image received every predetermined cycle is analyzed, the characteristic portion of the front (rear) portion of the vehicle is registered as a template, the vehicle is tracked by a pattern-matching process while updating the template, and the size of the template is reduced (enlarge) depending on a change in apparent width of a lane during template updating. Since the characteristic portion of the front (rear) portion of the vehicle is registered, and the vehicle is tracked by the pattern-matching process, no reference image of a road portion on which no vehicle exists is required, and influence of approaching or overlapping of another vehicle can be reduced. A traffic flow can be monitored at high precision regardless of deserted traffic or crowded traffic.

  • Patent number: 5825920
Abstract: A binary processing method for a variable density image the method includes the steps of binary processing an image having variable density, according to which brightness of an image having variable density to be binary processed is given as 1/n (where n is an integer of 2 or above), and expansion processing and smoothening processing the image having the brightness of 1/n so that a threshold value image for binary processing is generated. A difference is obtained between the threshold value image and the variable density image to be binary processed, such that it is possible to carry out binary processing even for an image having a complex background or variance in brightness.

  • Patent number: 5530441
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for measuring traffic flows, or in other words the flows of vehicles, inside and near a crossing. The method and apparatus are capable of extracting vehicles with a high level of accuracy. Overlap of vehicles can be avoided by setting the field of a camera to exclude a range from the inflow portion to the vicinity of center of the crossing but to include a range from the center to the vicinity of the outflow portion of the crossing. Accordingly, accuracy of traffic flow measurement can be improved.

  • Patent number: 5467402
Abstract: A plurality of image recognizing systems which are distributed and arranged and a centralized control apparatus are mutually connected via transmission lines. Each of the image recognizing apparatuses executes a predetermined image process to the image which is input from the ITV camera and transmits the processed image to the centralized control apparatus. The centralized control apparatus forms tuning parameters which are necessary for the instrumentation control by each image recognizing system from the transmitted processed image and transmits the tuning parameters to each image recognizing system. After the tuning parameters are received, each image recognizing system executes the measuring process. Therefore, for a plurality of image recognizing systems which are distributed at remote locations, the instrumentation control of each image recognizing system can be executed by the centralized control apparatus from one position.

  • Patent number: 5295197
Abstract: An information processing apparatus using a neural network learning function has, in one embodiment, a computer system and a pattern recognition apparatus associated with each other via a communication cable. The computer system includes a learning section having a first neural network and serves to adjust the weights of connection therein as a result of learning with a learning data signal supplied thereto from the pattern recognition apparatus via the communication cable. The pattern recognition apparatus includes an associative output section having a second neural network and receives data on the adjusted weights from the learning section via the communication cable to reconstruct the second neural network with the data on the adjusted weights. The pattern recognition apparatus with the associative output section having the reconstructed second neural network performs pattern recognition independently of the computer system with the communication cable being brought into an electrical isolation mode.

  • Patent number: 5243668
Abstract: A method and apparatus for binarizing a variable density image wherein brightness of the variable density image is changed by 1/n (where n is an integer of 2 or above), and an expansion processing is carried out on the brightness changed image to generate an expanded image. A smoothing processing is performed on the expanded image to generate a smoothed image and a differential image is generated by taking a difference between the smoothed image and the variable density image. The differential image is binarized by comparing the differential image to a predetermined threshold.
