  • Patent number: 5371637
Abstract: In a disk apparatus of contact-start-stop system, a head slider carries out a contact-start-stop operation at a non-specified position taken in the radial direction of a disk-shaped recording medium. This can be achieved by entering a random signal from a random number generator to a means for positioning the head slider in the radial direction of the disk when the recording medium begins to stop rotating. Accordingly, the head slider can be effectively inhibited from adhering to the disk, and the disk becomes unlikely to suffer wear, damage and head crash, and further, many information tracks can be formed on the disk.

  • Patent number: 4954919
Abstract: A rotary seek magnetic head assembly includes a rigid arm section mounted at one end on a rotary shaft. A load beam element is joined to the other end of the rigid arm section, the element having a portion substantially resilient adjacent to the rigid arm section. The load beam element is rigid over its length from the resilient portion to a point where a looped load bearing section is joined to present a loading force thereon. The looped load bearing section is formed with two arms extending from the load beam element to a cross leg which runs substantially parallel to the direction of rotary seek and is formed with a protuberance. A gimbal spring has a pair of outer flexible fingers which are joined at their first ends to the looped load bearing section and joined at their second ends by a cross leg from which a central finger extends. All the fingers of the gimbal spring runs parallel to the direction of rotary shaft to minimize bending forces which might occur during high speed accessing movements.

  • Patent number: 4907106
Abstract: A head driving system for a magnetic disk includes a controller which drives the head slider radially during times before takeoff and after landing of the head slider. A decrease in sliding abrasion per unit area of the takeoff and landing zone due to the radial movement of the slider results in less net abrasion damage and prolongs the life of the disk apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4896233
Abstract: A head slider supporting mechanism for supporting a head slider to float on a surface of a magnetic disk when the magnetic disk is rotating. The head slider supporting mechanism includes a rigid arm block and a suspension element secured to the rigid arm block at its fixed end, the suspension element having a resilient spring section adjacent the fixed end and a rigid load beam section adjacent a free end thereof so as to apply a loading force at the free end. A gimbal spring symmetric with a symmetric axis is secured to the free end of the suspension element, the gimbal spring mounting the head slider to enable the head slider to move in rolling and pitching directions. The end slider is mounted on the gimbal spring such that its longitudinal axis is inclined relative to the symmetric axis of the gimbal spring by an angle ranging from more than 10.degree. but less than 80.degree..

  • Patent number: 4893204
Abstract: An air bearing head slider for a magnetic disk apparatus. The head slider includes outside rails, and each of the outside rails includes a flat portion forming an air bearing surface, a first leading edge tapered portion formed at an air inflow edge of the head slider, and a second leading edge tapered portion formed between the first leading edge tapered portion and the flat portion. The first tapered portion is inclined with respect to the flat portion by a first angle, and the second tapered portion is inclined with respect to the flat portion by a second angle.

  • Patent number: 4734805
Abstract: A magnetic head supporting mechanism for positioning a magnetic head at a target track on the surface of a magnetic disk includes an arm section for moving the magnetic head to radially access different data tracks of the disk. A suspension element includes a mount section securing the suspension element to the arm section and a resilient section integral with the mount section and a rigid load beam section integral with that resilient section. A magnetic head slider assembly is supported at the free end of the load beam section opposing the surface of the magnetic disk. A flexible resin mass is firmly attached to the surface of the resilient section with the surface of the flexible resin being free except for that portion which effects attachment of the flexible resin to the suspension element. The resin may be one from the group consisting of two-pack epoxy adhesive, a one-pack thermosetting adhesive and an ultraviolet curing adhesive.
