Patent number: 6199983Abstract: A manufacturing method of a progressive multi-focal lens which has a progressive surface area comprising a distance portion and a near portion, which have different refractive powers, and a progressive portion positioned between them in which the refractive power changes progressively. The progressive surface which reflects customized information for each individual user including at least one of the information concerning each individual user's eyes or lifestyle of the user is designed. A lens design process provides processing data for the progressive multi-focal lenses with the custom-made progressive surfaces. By so doing, it is possible to provide the most appropriate spectacle lenses for the users and, at the same time, it is possible to eliminate the process of storing lenses in a semi-finished state after being processed so that it is possible to provide lenses which are suited to users at a lower cost.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1998Date of Patent: March 13, 2001Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Kazutoshi Kato, Akira Komatsu, Hiroyuki Mukaiyama, Tadashi Kaga

Patent number: 5926250Abstract: In a multifocal lens for eyeglass provided with visual field areas having different refractive powers, being a distance-vision area and a near-vision area, a multifocal lens for eyeglass (10) is provided, in which the difference of the average surface power D11 of the distance-vision area (11) of the surface (2) on the side of the object and the average surface power D12 of the near-vision area (12) is made mathematically less than the addition power Add. Furthermore, a specific addition power Add is provided by adjusting the average surface power D21 of the distance-vision area of the surface (3) on the side of the eye and the average surface power D22 of the near-vision area. It becomes possible to adjust the average surface powers D11 and D12 of the surface (2) on the side of the object such that the difference of magnification of the distance-vision area and the near-vision area becomes little.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1997Date of Patent: July 20, 1999Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Hiroyuki Mukaiyama, Kazutoshi Kato, Akira Komatsu, Tadashi Kaga

Patent number: 5886766Abstract: In a process of determining the surface shape of each of progressive multifocal lenses for use as lenses in eyeglasses, radii of curvature at main points are calculated, and then the surface is divided into a plurality of lattice sections, and then a curved-surface equation in the form of a bicubic expression is used for each section to determine the surface shape of the lens. A coefficient of each of the bicubic expressions is determined under a condition that continuation is established to curved-surface equations of sections adjacent at a boundary line between the sections to the derivatives of second order. Therefore, the surface shape of the lens obtained by the curved-surface equation for each section can be formed into a continuous and smooth surface. Since the curved surface can be determined for each section, a partial correction can easily be performed, if necessary.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1996Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Tadashi Kaga, Kazutoshi Kato

Patent number: 5745211Abstract: A progressive power lens provides a large clear vision area from a far-distance use section to a progressive section, wherein an astigmatism imbalance during vision through both eyes is eliminated, and eye movement between far and near distance use takes place smoothly. Astigmatism is distributed asymmetrically in the progressive region of the progressive power lens with respect to a meridian in such manner that a larger astigmatism occurs in a nose-side region than in an ear-side region. By so doing, distribution of astigmatism in the nose-side progressive region is eased to match that of the ear-side progressive region. Moreover, by making the increasing ratio .beta. of the astigmatism in the far-near direction milder than the increasing ratio .alpha. of the astigmatism in the left-right direction, a large clear vision area is obtained and the astigmatism imbalance during vision with both eyes is eliminated. Moreover, eye movement between the far-distance use and near-distance use takes place smoothly.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1995Date of Patent: April 28, 1998Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Hiroyuki Mukaiyama, Tadashi Kaga
