  • Patent number: 5780810
Abstract: An alternator power supplied electric heater is Where the resistence of a resistive heater element 3, consumed power and amount of consumed power are calculated from noncontrolled characteristics of an alternator 2, and supply of power to the resistive heater element 3 is controlled based on water temperature of engine WT to heat catalyst 11b to a predetermined temperature.

  • Patent number: 5609024
Abstract: An exhaust gas purification apparatus for an internal combustion engine is capable of stably introducing secondary air and heating a catalyst at the same time without increasing an amount of discharge current from the battery. When the internal combustion engine 1 is started, the output terminal A of a generator 10 is electrically connected to the first contact 51 of a switching relay 50 through an output switching circuit 33 and the output terminal A of the generator 10 is electrically isolated from a second contact 52 . As a result, when the internal combustion engine 1 is started, since a current output from the generator 10 is supplied to the motor 8 of a secondary air introduction unit 6 and the heating element 3 of a catalytic converter 4, the power of a battery 20 is consumed only by a plurality of electric loads and is not consumed by the motor 8 and the heating element 3.

  • Patent number: 5415142
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling air supply to an internal combustion engine comprises a main intake pipe for supplying air to the engine, a throttle valve disposed in the main intake pipe for controlling flow rate of the air supplied to the engine in dependence on depression of an accelerator pedal, a plurality of bypass passages disposed in parallel with the main intake pipe for allowing the air to be supplied to the engine by bypassing the throttle valve, a plurality of bypass valves installed in the plurality of bypass passages, respectively, a diagnosis means for diagnosing the throttle valve and devices associated therewith as to occurrence of abnormality, and a controller responsive to detection of the abnormality to close the throttle valve while allowing the bypass valves to control the intake air flow in dependence on depression of the accelerator pedal. The controller responds to detection of the abnormality for shifting a range of engine operation from a normal operation range.
