  • Patent number: 4608087
Abstract: The invention provides a novel composition useful as a heat-resistant coating material on the surface of a metal or ceramic article or as an adhesive agent for bonding metal articles, ceramic articles, or articles of a metal and a ceramic. The adhesive strength of the composition is so strong that no peeling takes place even after many repeated cycles of rapid heating and cooling. The composition comprises a refractory powder of an inorganic oxide, such as alumina and silica; a powdery inorganic compound having cation-exchangeability and a layered structure, such as mica; and an alkali metal silicate or aluminate as a binder. The maximum particle diameter of the powdery inorganic compound having a layered structure is important and relative to the average particle diameter of the refractory powder.

  • Patent number: 4605635
Abstract: The present invention provides a carbon-containing refractory composition characterized by containing 0.1-10 parts by weight of silicon hexaboride in 100 parts by weight of refractory material comprising 3-95 parts by weight of carbonaceous material such as graphite and 97-5 parts by weight of refractory aggregate. In the carbon-containing refractory composition of the present invention, silicon hexaboride is oxidized producing boron oxide on the surface of the refractory at a high temperature during operation, and the surface of the refractory is covered by the formation of a highly viscous molten liquid like kotoite (3 MgO.B.sub.2 O.sub.3), for example, which is formed from the components of the refractory, such as MgO, for example, thus particles of carbonaceous material such as graphite can be protected from oxidation.

  • Patent number: 4435215
Abstract: The invention provides a novel composition useful as a heat-resistant coating material for a metal or ceramic article surface. Also, the novel composition is useful as an adhesive agent for bonding metal articles, ceramic articles or articles of a metal and a ceramic. The adhesive strength of the composition is so strong that no peeling takes place even after many times of repeated cycles of rapid heating and quenching. The composition comprises a metal powder, such as iron, copper and silver; a powdery inorganic compound having cation-exchangeability and a layered structure, such as mica; and a binder of an alkali metal silicate or aluminate. The maximum particle diameter of the layered inorganic compound having a layered structure is important and relative to the average particle diameter of the metal powder.

  • Patent number: 4282288
Abstract: A graphite refractory article having a dense structure with a low porosity, which has a chemical composition consisting essentially of:100 wt. parts of natural flake graphite, as the carbonaceous raw material, comprising at least 70 wt. % flake graphite having a particle size within the range of from 0.1 to 3 mm and up to 30 wt. % flake graphite having a particle size of under 0.1 mm; from 4 to 10 wt. parts of powdery phenol resin as the binder; and, incidental impurities;said graphite refractory article being obtained by press-forming a dry mixture having said chemical composition under a forming pressure of from 700 to 2,000 kg/cm.sup.

  • Patent number: 4079032
Abstract: A process for producing unburned basic refractories wherein a binder is added and kneaded with a basic refractory material and the kneaded mixture is press-formed. The binder is a thermoplastic resinous material which is obtained by removing a light fraction having a boiling point of less than 200.degree. C under a reduced pressure of 100 mmHg and having a benzene-insoluble fraction content of less than 10% by weight from at least one member selected from the group consisting of a heavy oil obtained by a steam cracking of petroleum and a polymerization product of said heavy oil. The slag penetration resistance, slag erosion resistance and slaking resistance of the given unburned basic refractories are substantially improved.
