    Abstract: A digital recording/playback apparatus with improved error correction capability and a method thereof are provided. In the apparatus and method thereof, regardless of trick play data and stuffing data, normal play data is outer-error-corrected. To enhance the error correction capability of the normal play data, during a recording mode, a predetermined pattern data is arranged in the stuffing data region and trick play data region and an outer parity is added to the normal play data to then be outer-error-correction coded. During a playback mode, the predetermined pattern data used during error-correction coding is arranged in the stuffing data region and trick play data region and inner-error-correction decoded normal play data is outer-error-correction decoded using the outer parity.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for recording/reproducing an ATV or DVB signal are provided. During recording, normal- and trick-play data are extracted from the signal transmitted with a transport packet structure. The extracted normal-play data are mapped into five sync blocks for every two transport packets and the normal-play data are then outer-error-correction-encoded after replacing the trick-play data having an SD-ECC structure with data of a predetermined pattern. The extracted trick-play data is then arranged in a video data region having the SD-ECC structure and the trick-play data are outer-error-correction-encoded by replacing the video auxiliary data having the SD-ECC structure with data of a predetermined pattern and mapping the result into a five-sync-block unit. The outer-error-correction-encoded normal- and trick-play data are rearranged in the video data region having the SD-ECC structure and then are inner-error-correction-encoded.

    Abstract: The error-correction coding function of an SD-VCR for recording and reproducing an ATV signal is modified to exclude trick-play data from outer error-correction coding in two-dimensional Reed-Solomon coding of normal play data, to improve error-correcting capability for the normal-play data. The same error-correction coding used as inner error-correction coding in the two-dimensional Reed-Solomon coding of normal play data is performed on the trick-play data as well as on the outer error-correction coded normal-play data. The resulting inner codes are preferably diagonal-scan interleaved before recording, at least for the normal-play data. During reproduction, after de-interleaving when interleaving was performed during recording, the inner error-correction coded data are decoded and separated into trick-play data and outer error-correction coded normal-play data. Outer error-correction coded normal-play data are decoded during normal play.

Here, utilizing the recurrent pattern of the block identification data ID, the outer parity OP2 with respect to the block identification data ID is predictive-coded, and the outer parity decoding is performed along with the result of the predictive coding.     Abstract: A method for digital magnetic recording and reproducing of video images while compressively encoding video image data to reduce a bit rate includes the steps of forming the compressed data into sync-block units corresponding to minimum units for error-correcting, recording the compressed data as sync block units on a plurality of tracks of a digital magnetic tape, and reproducing a recognizable image corresponding to the video image data from the recorded compressed data. According to one aspect of the method, the sync blocks are arranged so as to be recorded on the plurality of tracks using a line sequential scanning method in the track-traversing direction, and the arranged sync blocks are restored to their original locations during reproduction. A digital magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus suitable for implementing the above method is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method of compressing digital image data and a device thereof of coding digital image data within constant rate data not deteriorating a resolution of an image without regard to a complexity of digital image data. A format of M.times.N pixel blocks (where M, N are natural numbers) is made from luminance and sub-sampled chrominance signals, and first to fourth edge values TY, TR-Y, TB-Y, Ai respectively from the luminance, sub-sampled signals and the blocks are detected. A quantization scaling factor is determined by normalizing the first edge value, and the number of bits corresponding to the each block is allocated according to the first to fourth edge values. The number of AC (alternating current) factor bits is allocated by subtracting the number of DC (direct current) factor bits of the each block coded by a one-dimensional Huffman coding from the number of the allocation bits.
