    Abstract: Provided are an apparatus and method for processing a three-dimensional (3D) video signal which corrects first and second video signals to prevent a reduction in a 3D effect and a disparity estimation error due to a difference between the first and second video signals. The method includes: a video signal detection unit detecting a difference between respective characteristics of received first and second video signals; and a video signal correction unit correcting the first video signal or the second video signal to equalize the characteristics of the first and second video signals. When the apparatus and the method are used, a reduction in the 3D effect and the disparity estimation error due to the difference between the first and second video signals can be prevented.

The direct viewing type stereoscopic image display apparatus includes: a first memory which has a first field image signal divided from an image signal of one frame; a second memory which has a second field image signal divided from the image signal of one frame; a display device which forms a first field image and a second field image according to the first field image signal and the second field image signal; an image shift unit which sequentially shifts the first field image and the second field image; and a viewing zone dividing unit which divides the viewing zones of the first field image and the second field image. Thereby, the second field image is shifted from the first field image by a predetermined distance and thus a moiré pattern is removed and image quality is improved.

The apparatus includes a video curve generation unit for calculating the distances between the adjacent frames of all intra frames of input video and generating a video curve that is a cumulative curve of the distances; a video curve division unit for dividing the video curve into a certain number of segments; a still image selection unit for selecting video images corresponding to certain points of the divided video curve as representative still images; and a video output unit for outputting the still images selected by the still image generation unit. Accordingly, the present invention can summarize the video and provide representative still images to a user at high speed.

In the image quality assessment method, the contrast of a measurement pattern displayed on the display apparatus, the brightness of the background, and the resolution are adjusted, and thereby the luminance characteristic of the measurement pattern is detected. Accordingly, the image quality of a display apparatus can be assessed using the number of waves determined from the luminance characteristic and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the waves. Therefore, image quality assessment can be performed objectively by the display apparatus.
