  • Patent number: 6577841
Abstract: A heating roller for use in fixing a toner in an electrophotographic process and the method of making the heating roller. The heating roller includes a roller body having a ceramic or glass cylindrical outer surface, a heat-generating layer formed on the roller body, electrodes on axial ends of the heat-generating layer, and a protection layer on the heat-generating layer. The heat generating layer is formed by heat-treating a ruthenium based paste. The paste may be made from a ruthenium compound, a glass frit containing lead, a powdered silver compound, an organic binder and an organic solvent.

  • Patent number: 6049692
Abstract: A fixing unit for an electrophotographic printing device includes a heating roller having an outermost surface for engaging a printable medium, and an innermost surface coated with an infrared radiation material for absorbing heat. A halogen lamp is axially installed along a central shaft within an interior of the heating roller for generating the heat absorbed by the infrared radiation material. A pressure roller is provided for engaging and applying pressure upon the printable medium as the printable medium passes between the heating roller and the pressure roller. The infrared radiation material is preferably formed with ceramics, and readily absorbs electromagnetic waves exhibiting wavelengths from 3 to 1000 microns.

  • Patent number: 5923927
Abstract: A fixing device for an electrophotographic apparatus, that uses both heat and pressure to fix a toner image onto a sheet of paper. The heat and pressure rollers are supported by a one piece frame which attaches to a bracket inside the electrophotographic apparatus. The one piece frame has slots in it where a spring is attached to increase the force of the pressure roller upon the heating roller.

  • Patent number: 5742870
Abstract: A method for regulating a temperature of a fixing unit in an electrophotographic system contemplates the steps of preheating the fixing unit in response to application of electrical power to the fixing unit; heating a surface of a heating roller of the fixing unit to a heightened temperature that is greater than a printing temperature during an initial printing stage of a printing operation when a number of sheets that have been printed in the printing operation is less than or equal to a predetermined number, and heating the surface of the heating roller to the printing temperature when the number of sheets that have been printed in the printing operation is greater than the predetermined number; printing one of the sheets after the heating step; determining whether a last one of the sheets has been printed; returning to the heating step when the last one of the sheets has not been printed, and terminating the printing operation and activating a standby mode when the last one of the sheets has been printed.
