    Abstract: A method and system provide alternative communication paths utilizing overhead channels available on the communication network to permit isolated offices to have access to a data network and hence a remotely located monitor/controller via an office that has direct access to such a data network. In addition, the system permits an arrangement of subnetworks which allows a first subnetwork to act as a back-up or redundant path for obtaining alarm and status information regarding a second subnetwork via overhead channels available on the communication path in the first subnetwork.
