Abstract: A method for developing a population of substantially lineage-specific cells and their use inter alia in tissue replacement therapy, tissue augmentation therapy, diagnostic applications, for the identification of growth factors and other autocrine factors. Specifically, substantially homogeneous populations of mammalian cells of the astrocyte lineage are provided and selected on the basis of differential marker expression.
