    Abstract: A unitary enclosure base for a data storage device integrally includes a first surface beneath a bottom disk, a bypass channel formed with an entry area with a lower surface below the first surface, a second surface lower than the first surface and beneath an actuator arm that services the bottom surface of the bottom disk, and a flow diverter extending upward from the first surface and positioned upstream of the actuator arm. The diverter may be positioned relative to the bypass channel such that disk-generated gas flow is diverted into the bypass channel away from the actuator arm. The base may further include a spoiler extending upward from the first surface and positioned downstream of the actuator arm. The spoiler may be positioned to inhibit a wake effect upon the actuator arm.

    Abstract: Components and assemblies for a hard disk drive (HDD) with a recessed actuator joint are described. A rotary actuator hub assembly comprises a shaft having a flange, and a pivot seat on which the flange is seated when the shaft is fastened to an HDD chassis. According to an embodiment, the pivot seat has at least one “contact-reducing feature” recessed from the surface of the pivot seat at which the seat contacts the flange. A purpose of the contact-reducing feature(s) of the pivot seat is to weaken the joint between the actuator hub assembly and the chassis, thereby mechanically loosening the rotary actuator assembly from the chassis. Consequently, movements to and vibrations from the chassis are less likely to be transmitted to the rotary actuator assembly and, ultimately, to the HDD read/write head(s).

    Abstract: A voice coil includes a stack of a plurality of layers of aligned windings held between an outer holding portion and an inner holding portion of the carriage assembly. The carriage assembly is formed integrally with the voice coil through injection molding. An outermost peripheral layer is a conductive wire wound a number of turns that falls short of the number of turns required to constitute a complete layer. A step is thereby formed between the outermost peripheral layer and a layer adjacent thereto and inner therefrom. The outer holding portion includes a reinforcement portion formed thereon to cover part of a transverse end face of the voice coil. The outermost peripheral layer opposes a force acting on the outer holding portion from top downward and the reinforcement portion opposes a force acting on the outer holding portion from bottom upward.

    Abstract: Embodiments in accordance with the present invention reduce the height of a head gimbal assembly (HGA) while maintaining the rigidity of a load beam. According to one embodiment of the present invention, an HGA includes a slider, a flexure, and a load beam. The load beam includes a flange formed to protrude to the opposite side to a magnetic disk at the edge of the load beam extending in the length-wise direction. The load beam has a recessed portion opened to the side opposing the magnetic disk and having an opening area larger than the area of the back surface of the slider opposing the flexure. The slider is provided in the recessed portion so that the position of the surface of the load beam is between a virtual surface including the surface of the slider opposing the magnetic disk and a virtual surface including the slider back surface.

    Abstract: A disk drive and an arm coil support assembly are to be provided which enables a trace to be disposed with a simple construction without the need of machining arms. In one embodiment, a trace for connection between a head and an FPC is disposed on an opposite surface of each of arms and opposite to a confronting surface of each of the arms which confronts a recording surface of a disk. The trace is bent nearly vertically in the vicinity of a connection between a coil support which supports the arms, and holds a VCM coil and the arm and is connected to the FPC. The coil support includes a force mechanism having a gap for insertion therein of the trace and also having a pressure portion spaced through the gap from the surface on which the trace is disposed. The force mechanism prevents wafting of the trace from the opposite surface of the arm caused by the bending of the trace.

During unloading, a portion of the tab offset from the center in the transverse direction of the tab first comes into contact with the sliding surface of the ramp. The load beam has a flange formed to be bent and continuously from the front end portion of the tab up to both ends of the head support portion.

    Abstract: Terminals of a flexible printed circuit board and terminals of a wiring trace in a head suspension assembly are to be connected with each other by soldering without causing a soldering defect. In an embodiment, a terminal structure of a multi-connector in a wiring trace which includes an insulating layer and a conductor pattern portion formed on a surface of the insulating layer is provided with exposed portions of terminals exposed from apertures formed in part of the insulating layer and is also provided with lining portions adjacent to the exposed portions in a longitudinal direction of the conductor pattern portion and bonded to the insulating layer. Even if terminals of the multi-connector are cracked when soldered, not only conductivity is ensured, but also it is possible to strengthen the terminals, because the lining portions of the terminals are bonded to the insulating layer.

The base is provided in an outer edge portion thereof with a covered portion which is covered with the sealing tape. In the covered portion, a sealed portion to which the sealing tape adheres is inclined so that an outer edge thereof becomes higher than an inner edge thereof.
