Next, temporarily compressed terminal-equipped electrical wires are disposed between different molds. In other words, the cover crimping portion (9) is subjected to final compression. In other words, the present invention is provided with a first compression step for preliminarily compressing the cover portion (27) and a second compression step for forcefully compressing the covering part.

Also, 131 is the cross-sectional area of the covered area (27) after compression. In the present invention, the compression rate for the wire (25) is set between 50% and 80%. Also, the compression rate for the covered area (27) is set between 40% and 90%. The amount of compression by the molds (31a, 31b) is set so that the compression rates are within these ranges. In the present invention, the compression rate is calculated by: (cross-sectional area after compression)/(cross-sectional area before compression). That is, 80% compression rate means that the cross-sectional area has decreased by 20% due to compression. That is, the relationships of 80%?(A1/A0)?50% and 90%?(B1/B0)?40% are satisfied.

The first step includes applying ultrasonic vibrations to the core wire while leaving a compression margin for the crimping by the second step such that the resistance between the electric wire and the female terminal is stabilized until the strand wires of the terminal-attached electric wire are severed when the core wire of the terminal-attached electric wire is further compressed after the second step.

    Abstract: The height (F) of a protruding portion (7) is less than the thickness of a crimping portion (5) before crimping. If the height of the protruding portion (7) is greater than the thickness of the crimping portion, then a recess is prone to form in the inner surface of the crimping portion (5). In other words, because there is more metal flowing outwards, a recess corresponding to the metal flow is prone to form on the inner surface side. If such a recess does form, adhesion with a covered area (27) is likely to deteriorate. This is problematic because such a gap would be a path allowing the ingress of moisture. On the other hand, if the height of the protruding portion (7) is less than the thickness of the crimping portion (5) before crimping, then when the crimping portion (5) is compressed during crimping, the amount of metal flowing towards the protruding portion (7) diminishes, making it possible to suppress the formation of a receding portion on the inner surface of the crimping portion (5).

A material that shrinks by a factor of 7% or less after being allowed to stand for 120 hours at a high temperature of 120° C. is used for this cover portion.
