  • Patent number: 9199197
Abstract: A fuel addition valve that adds fuel into the exhaust gas passage of the engine in the form of fine fuel droplets, an upstream NOx adsorption-reduction catalyst, and a downstream NOx adsorption-reduction catalyst are arranged in this order. Platinum Pt and palladium Pd, as noble metal, are supported on the downstream NOx adsorption-reduction NOx catalyst such that the ratio of the mole number of the platinum Pt to the sum of the mole numbers of the platinum Pt and the palladium Pd is approx. 50% to approx. 80%. Only platinum Pt is supported on the upstream NOx adsorption-reduction catalyst. According to this structure, even when liquid fuel is supplied into exhaust gas, NOx can be effectively released from the NOx adsorption-reduction catalyst, and further the amount of NOx that the NOx adsorption-reduction catalyst can adsorb at a low temperature increases.

  • Patent number: 9181842
Abstract: A temperature sensor includes temperature detecting means and at least one of a catalyst and an adsorbent applied to the surface of the temperature detecting means. At least one of the catalyst and the adsorbent catalyzes an exothermic reaction of a reactant in gas on the temperature detecting means. A temperature that is increased by the exothermic reaction is detected by the temperature detecting means. The catalytic efficiency for the exothermic reaction of at least one of the catalyst and the adsorbent is reduced by sulfur poisoning. The temperature sensor is disposed upstream of an exhaust purification system. Accordingly, it is determined that the temperature sensor is subjected to sulfur poisoning if the temperature detected by the temperature sensor is below a prescribed temperature.

  • Patent number: 9108153
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, inside of an engine exhaust passage, a hydrocarbon feed valve (15) and an exhaust treatment catalyst (13) are arranged. On a substrate (45) of the exhaust treatment catalyst (13), a coat layer comprised of at least two layers of a top coat layer (46) and a bottom coat layer (47) is formed. The top coat layer (46) is comprised of an exhaust purification catalyst for reacting NOx contained in exhaust gas and reformed hydrocarbons, while the bottom coat layer (47) is comprised of an NOx absorption catalyst. The concentration of hydrocarbons which flows into the exhaust treatment catalyst (13) is made to vibrate within a predetermined range of amplitude and within a predetermined range of period. Due to this, NOx contained in exhaust gas and NOx desorbed from the NOx absorption catalyst (47) are reduced in the exhaust purification catalyst (46).

  • Patent number: 9017614
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, inside of an engine exhaust passage, an NOx adsorption part and an NOx purification part are arranged. The NOx purification part has the property of reducing NOx which is contained in exhaust gas if the concentration of hydrocarbons is made to vibrate by within a predetermined range of amplitude and within a predetermined range of period. When NOx is to be desorbed from the NOx adsorption part, the current NOx which is contained in the exhaust gas and the NOx which is desorbed from the NOx adsorption part are reduced by making the concentration of hydrocarbons of the NOx purification part vibrate by the amplitude and period which are set for the current engine operating state, at least of which (?T·k) has been corrected so that the amount of hydrocarbons becomes greater.

  • Patent number: 8745972
Abstract: An exhaust purification system of an internal combustion engine includes an NOX storage reduction catalyst device which is arranged in an engine exhaust passage. The NOX storage reduction catalyst device stores SOX simultaneously with NOX. When the stored SOX amount exceeds a predetermined allowable amount, the SOX is made to be released by SOX release control which raises the temperature of the NOX catalyst device to the SOX releasable temperature, then makes the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas which flows into the NOX catalyst device the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio or rich. The NOX catalyst device has a residual SOX storage amount which finally remains even if performing SOX release control depending on the temperature of the NOX catalyst device when performing SOX release control. The system uses the residual SOX storage amount of the current SOX release control as the basis to calculate the SOX release speed at each timing in the current SOX release control.

  • Patent number: 8701393
Abstract: An internal combustion engine in which an SOx trap catalyst (13) for trapping SOx contained in the exhaust gas contains an oxygen adsorbing and releasing material (54) which can adsorb SO2 contained in the exhaust gas and an SOx storage material (55) which can store SOx in the form of sulfates. The SO2 which is contained in the exhaust gas is chemically adsorbed at the oxygen adsorbing and releasing material (54) without being oxidized. If the temperature of the SOx trap catalyst (13) becomes higher than the start temperature of adsorbed SO2 movement, the SO2 which is chemically adsorbed at the oxygen adsorbing and releasing material (54) is oxidized and stored in the form of sulfates in the SOx storage material (55).

  • Patent number: 8640442
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, an SOX trap catalyst (13) which traps SOX contained in the exhaust gas is arranged upstream of an NOX storing catalyst (15) in an engine exhaust passage. When the NOX storing catalyst (15) should release NOX, auxiliary fuel is injected into a combustion chamber (2) at a combustible timing after the completion of injection of fuel into the combustion chamber (2) for generating the engine output. At this time, the auxiliary fuel is injected so that the air-fuel ratio A/F of the combustion gas in the combustion chamber (2) does not become below a minimum allowable air-fuel ratio M where SOX trapped at the SOX trap catalyst (13) will not be released.

  • Publication number: 20130034469
Abstract: A control system of an internal combustion engine in which a catalyst device having oxidation ability is arranged in the exhaust system, is provided. When a temperature of the catalyst device is lower than a set temperature, the combustion temperature is made a first combustion temperature or under or is made a second combustion temperature or over, to make an amount of lower olefin in the exhaust gas smaller than that when the combustion temperature is higher than the first combustion temperature and is lower than the second combustion temperature. Therefore, an amount of lower olefin which reduces the oxidation rate of CO in the catalyst device is decreased so as to realize the quick warming-up of the catalyst device by using of the oxidation reaction heat of CO.

  • Patent number: 8307639
Abstract: An SOx trap catalyst able to trap SOx contained in the exhaust gas is arranged in an engine exhaust passage upstream of an NOx storing catalyst in an internal combustion engine. When the SOx trap rate of the SOx trap catalyst falls, fuel is added in the exhaust gas flowing into the SOx trap catalyst to form in the SOx trap catalyst a region in which an air-fuel ratio becomes locally rich. SOx released from the SOx trap catalyst in this region can be trapped in the SOx trap catalyst at the downstream side once again without flowing out from the downstream end of the SOx trap catalyst.
