    Abstract: A disk array unit includes a motherboard enclosed within an enclosure. A group of first hard disk drives are mounted on the front surface of the motherboard. The individual first hard disk drives are kept in a standing attitude with respect to the front surface of the motherboard. One or more second hard disk drives are also mounted on the back surface of the motherboard. The disk array unit allows not only the front surface but also the back surface of the motherboard to receive the hard disk drives, so that the hard disk drives can efficiently be incorporated within the limited space, as compared with a conventional disk array unit. It is possible to realize an increased recording capacity of the entire disk array unit without enlarging the motherboard or adding another motherboard.
