    Abstract: A flying height tester includes a glass disc facing a magnetic head slider under test; an optical system for guiding light to the glass disc so that multiple reflections of light occur between the glass disc and the magnetic head slider; a light sensor receiving reflection light from the glass disc to output light intensity data; and a processor which calculates back the flying height based on an output function of the light sensor. The processor calibrates intensity gain data and intensity offset data of the output function using the data obtained in a pseudo-zero state of the flying height. This pseudo-zero state is obtained by applying an index matching liquid between a first-calibration magnetic head slider, having the same optical constants as the magnetic head slider under test, and the glass disc, the index matching liquid having a refractive index identical to the glass disc.

    Abstract: The terminal deals effectively with an error occurrence in accordance with a selected one of modes that comprise a normal mode and a debug mode. The terminal comprises a mode information holder, an error detector, a mode judge unit and a initializer. The mode information holder holds mode information that indicates which mode is the selected mode. For example, the holding of the mode information is carried out ahead of supplying power to the terminal. When an error occurs in the terminal, the error detector detects the error. Then the mode judge unit judges which mode is the selected mode, by referring to the mode information so as to produce an initialization request if the normal mode is the selected mode. The initializer initializes the terminal in response to the initialization request. On the other hand, the mode judge unit does not produce the initialization request if the debug mode is the selected mode.

    Abstract: A tapping machine provided with a quill for rotatably supporting a spindle which holds a tap on one end thereof, a reversible electric motor for rotating the spindle and axially reciprocating the quill, an overload release clutch mounted in a power transmitting mechanism which is disposed between the quill and the motor, for suspending the power transmission between the quill and the motor when an overload is applied on the quill, and pulse signal generating means mounted between the clutch and the quill in the power transmitting mechanism for generating one pulse signal in response to each one pre-set unit distance of the quill during the forward motion thereof. The tapping machine performs a working cycle in good order wherein the spindle advances from the start position while being forwardly rotated until the number of pulse signals generated from the pulse signal generating means accords with a pre-set number and returns while being backwardly rotated back to the start position.
