  • Publication number: 20090273829
Abstract: The observing apparatus is being equipped with an image-forming optical system which forms an image of light emitted from a specimen, an imaging unit which picks up the image of the specimen formed by the image-forming optical system, and an illuminating unit which illuminates the specimen with a surface illuminant in which bright areas and dark areas are arranged alternately in order to provide an observing apparatus suitable to observe a transparent specimen with a wide field of view. If the position of the surface illuminant and the pitch of contrasting are set properly, each partial area of the specimen is illuminated obliquely at a small angle by each bright area of the surface illuminant. Therefore, the imaging unit can acquire a dark-field observation image of each partial area.

  • Publication number: 20090042238
Abstract: A proposition is to accurately evaluate a phototoxic property (cell function) concerning a living cell. To this end, an evaluating method of cell function includes the operations of dyeing a specific site of the living cell with a fluorescent dye, irradiating the living cell with light to measure changes in brightness of resulting fluorescence generated at an adjacent site of the specific site, and evaluating the phototoxic property based on the brightness changes. In the event of functional depression in the specific site, the fluorescent dye cannot be retained therein and is extravasated into the adjacent site through the membrane of the specific site. The present embodiment can measure the extent of this extravasation, making it possible to accurately evaluate the phototoxic property.

  • Patent number: 7346245
Abstract: A switch-type imaging fiber apparatus and a branch-type imaging fiber apparatus are provided. Light emitted from a laser light source is made incident on an opening of an IF (image fiber) guided by a GM (galvanometer), output from an optical system provided at a leading end portion of the IF, and applied to an observation target. The light reflected by the observation target is sent back to the IF, transformed into parallel light by an f? objective lens, reflected by a dichroic mirror, made incident on an image pickup device (CCD) via an imaging lens, and can be observed on a monitor. The GM is controlled to switch to make the light incident on the opening of an arbitrary one of a plurality of IFs. Accordingly, observation can be performed by focusing the light solely on the arbitrary IF.
