  • Patent number: 6837040
Abstract: An in-cylinder injection type spark-ignition internal combustion engine and a control method thereof realize a stabilized stratified-charge combustion by setting a large lift amount to an intake valve when the engine is cold-started and by executing a compression stroke injection. At this time, warming-up capability of a catalyst is improved by delaying an ignition timing.

  • Publication number: 20040261400
Abstract: A combustion condition for each of plural cylinders included in an internal combustion engine is set by the following control that is performed according to an intake air amount in each of the plural cylinders. A reference cylinder is set to a cylinder in which the intake air amount is smallest, and a fuel injection amount for the reference cylinder is set to a fuel injection amount for realizing a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio. The air-fuel ratio in each of the cylinders other than the reference cylinder is set according to the intake air amount in each of the cylinders such that the torque equal to reference torque generated in the reference cylinder is generated. When this setting is performed, air-fuel ratios that are out of a predetermined region in the vicinity of the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio (i.e., air-fuel ratios that are in an avoidance region) are excluded.

  • Patent number: 6557524
Abstract: An apparatus and method control a negative pressure in an internal combustion engine equipped with a brake booster that uses a negative pressure produced on a downstream side of a throttle valve provided in an intake passage of the engine, as a power source for amplifying the pedal pressing force. A controller of the apparatus or method determines whether a negative pressure applied to the brake booster has reached a predetermined level when the internal combustion engine is started, and, if the negative pressure has not reached the predetermined level, increases an operating speed of the engine to a predetermined high speed and then keeps the throttle valve in a fully closed position during a period of time in which the engine proceeds to a steady-state operating mode.

  • Patent number: 6478007
Abstract: An in-cylinder-injection internal combustion engine of spark ignition type has a plurality of cylinders, a fuel accumulator for storing a pressurized fuel; a fuel injector system that injects the pressurized fuel into each of the cylinders; a spark ignition system that ignites the fuel injected into each of the cylinders; and is controlled such that the engine is started by a partial operation of a selected at least one of the cylinders with a fuel injected into the selected at least one of the cylinders in at least its intake stroke. Then, a full operation of all of the cylinders with the fuel injected into all of the cylinders is started. The full operation is initiated not before a pressure of the fuel in the fuel accumulator has been raised to a level high enough to permit injection of the fuel into each of the cylinders in its compression stroke, as a result of the partial operation of the selected at least one of the cylinders.
