  • Patent number: 4658799
Abstract: For a four cylinder engine, there are provided two ignition coil units, each including a primary coil and a secondary coil. The primary coil is wound around a center core made of grain oriented silicon steel, which forms a closed magnetic path for the magnetic flux produced by the coil unit together with a side core formed of non-grain oriented steel as one body. In the closed magnetic path there is provided an air gap. The current of the primary coils is controlled by transistors operated in response to gate signals furnished from an ignition control unit. The transistors are provided with a diode in the reverse parallel therewith. With these arrangements, the ignition coil assembly for an electronic distribution system can be miniaturized with the unfavorable influence of the magnetic inteference suppressed remarkably.

  • Patent number: 4619241
Abstract: An high-energy ignition device having an igniter coil adapted to produce a high voltage for allowing an electric discharge between electrodes of a sparking plug in accordance with the output from an ignition circuit, and a DC-DC converter adapted to produce a voltage high enough to maintain the electric discharge in the sparking plug. The DC-DC converter is connected such that the output thereof is superposed to the discharge current produced by the igniter coil. The igniter coil and the transformer of the DC-DC converter are integrated with a forming resin. Consequently, the electrical insulation between the parts is improved and the mounting of the ignition device on vehicles is facilitated.

Abstract: An ignition coil for an internal combustion engine including a first case of a hollow synthetic resin, which has one end fixing high voltage terminals for effecting connections with ignition plugs and its other end formed with an opening. Diode terminals are attached to the first case. The high voltage diodes which have the same side ends connected with the high voltage terminals from the first case and their other ends connected with the diode terminals. The high voltage diodes in the first case are encapsulated within an epoxy resin composite. Primary and secondary coils supplied with electric signals synchronized with a rotational speed in a secondary case to which primary and secondary terminals are attached. The second case is filled with an epoxy resin such that gaps between the wirings of the coils are sufficiently impregnated with that epoxy resin. The diode terminals and the secondary terminals are connected through the coils.

  • Patent number: 4177782
Abstract: Two ignition plugs are provided for each cylinder of an engine. Since it is desirable that these two plugs be sparked by one ignition coil, separate output terminal of a secondary coil of the ignition coil are respectively connected to each of the two plugs. An impedance circuit element is provided between one terminal of the secondary coil and ground to disturb a balance of the output voltages from the secondary coil terminals. The voltage of the other terminal of the secondary coil then reaches the break-down voltage between the air gap of its respective ignition plug first due to this imbalance of terminal voltages. The voltage of the one terminal then reaches the break-down voltage between the air gap of its respective ignition plug after the breaking-down of the other ignition plug. The two ignition plugs of each cylinder can thus be sparked at approximately the same time by providing the impedance circuit element between one output terminal of the ignition coil and ground.
