  • Patent number: 5573267
Abstract: A mechanism for covering a casing accommodating an air bag therein is formed of a lid for covering the casing, mounting pieces protruding from a back surface of the lid for mounting the lid to the casing, and high strength portions. First and second tear lines are formed in the back surface of the lid to allow the lid to be torn along the first and second tear lines. The first tear line extends in the width direction of a vehicle, and the second tear lines intersect the first tear line. The high strength portions are disposed outside the second tear lines near the respective connecting corners between the first tear line and the second tear line. The high strength portions are ribs, which are disposed on the back surface of the lid and project such that the second tear lines extend along the ribs. The ribs continue from the mounting pieces to thereby prevent a tear, which has traveled along the first tear line, from further traveling sideways at the connecting corners.

  • Patent number: 5547218
Abstract: An air bag consists of a front panel and rear panel. An inflater mounting opening is provided at the central portion of the rear panel. The rear panel and the front panel are connected to each other at a vicinity of the center thereof by threads. The threads allow the air bag to extend sideward at first, and then the threads are chopped so as to allow the air bag to extend forward.

  • Patent number: 5478105
Abstract: Adapter members are projected from the inner surface of a cover member and tear lines including a first tear line which extends in the transverse direction of the cover member and second tear lines which extend in the longitudinal direction thereof are provided. The second tear lines are disposed at a short distance away from the adapter members. The thickness of portions of the cover member outside the second tear lines is smaller than that of the adapter members. The thickness of a portion of the cover member between the second tear lines is smaller than that of the portions of the cover member outside the second tear lines. Therefore, the tearing operation proceeding along the first tear line changes the course at the intersecting portions with certainty, and proceeds to the second tear lines. Thus, the module cover is torn open exactly along the tear line.

  • Patent number: 5431434
Abstract: A modular cover for an air bag system is formed of a rigid inner layer, a soft outer layer, and a tear line along which the modular cover is torn. The tear line includes a raised portion extending from the inner layer into the outer layer, and a recessed portion formed in the inner surface of the modular cover. The modular cover includes projecitons projecting from the inner layer into the outer layer and located adjacent to the tear line so as to prevent the outer layer from suffering from depressions. The projections are formed in a shape such that the their width decreases from an upstream side to a downstream side along a flow direction of the resin when the outer layer is molded.

  • Patent number: 5183615
Abstract: A molding method is used to produce a module cover for an air bag device which has undercut portions in mounting edge portions thereof. A lower mold disposed inside the module cover to be produced is of the split type so that is includes a central mold disposed at the center and a plurality of lateral molds for molding of the undercut portions. The mating face of the central mold with each lateral mold is oblique so that its bottom is closer to the edge of the module cover than its top.
