Patent number: 8104563Abstract: In a hood airbag device for use in a vehicle, left and right bag-expansion openings are formed at the rear end portion of the outer hood panel in a hood width direction, and the deployment positions of corresponding left and right airbags are controlled or restrained by the bag-expansion openings, respectively. Further, the hood-center side ends (60L?) of the left air bag (60L) and the hood-center side ends (60R?) of the right air bag (60R) are adapted to press against each other when they are deployed. Accordingly, it is possible to suppress the airbags from being raised up by a wind pressure or the like and to quickly deploy the airbags over a broad extent.Type: GrantFiled: January 4, 2007Date of Patent: January 31, 2012Assignees: Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki Kaisha, Takata CorporationInventors: Sotaro Narita, Hiroyuki Takahashi, Takayuki Takimoto

Publication number: 20100156070Abstract: A vehicle hood airbag device in which a door (18) that covers an opening (22A) in the outer hood panel (22) is supported by a hinge (21) when an airbag (16) is deployed. The hinge (21) is connected to a stepped bolt (52) (a connector member) on the side of an inner hood panel (24) so that the hinge (21) is relatively displaceable within a predetermined range with respect to the inner hood panel (24). Accordingly, it is possible to accommodate the dimensional variation between the opening (22A) of the outer hood panel (22) and the door (18) when the door (18) is attached to the outer hood panel (22) to cover the opening (22A) by the relative displacement of the hinge (21) with respect to the stepped bolt (52), thereby maintaining design integrity with the external appearance of the vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 4, 2007Publication date: June 24, 2010Inventors: Hiroyuki Takahashi, Takayuki Takimoto

Patent number: 7559564Abstract: An outwardly deploying airbag system can maintain the internal pressure of an airbag for a required period without vainly increasing the maximum internal pressure of the airbag during inflation. When a sensor detects a collision with a pedestrian, an inflator performs a first gas injection step. An airbag is thereby deployed into a final deployment shape. Subsequently, when the internal pressure of the airbag falls to a predetermined pressure because of leakage of gas through vent holes, and a sensor predicts or detects a collision with a pedestrian, the inflator performs a second gas injection step. Consequently, the internal pressure of the airbag remains high for a long period, and the airbag sufficiently absorbs an impact whenever the pedestrian hits the airbag. The pressure and amount of gas injected in the first gas injection step can be made smaller than in related art, and the required airbag strength is reduced.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2005Date of Patent: July 14, 2009Assignee: Takata CorporationInventor: Takayuki Takimoto

Patent number: 7549663Abstract: An airbag device for pedestrian is structured to inflate plural airbags side by side to suppress the impact to the pedestrian hit by the automobile at the area around the abutment portion between the adjacent airbags. An airbag 5L inflates to cover left half side of a rear edge portion of a hood 3, a cowl top 2 and a windshield 6 from the center of the automobile in a width direction, and an airbag 5R inflates to cover right half side. In the inflation state, the airbags 5L and 5R are brought into abutment around the center of the automobile in the width direction. Recess portions 10F and 10R are formed as cut portions of a front wall portion 8b and a rear wall portion 8c of an airbag storage case 8 from upper edge portions below the abutment portion between the airbags 5L and 5R.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 2008Date of Patent: June 23, 2009Assignee: Takata CorporationInventors: Takayuki Takimoto, Hiroyuki Takahashi
