  • Patent number: 7974830
Abstract: A tape management method capable of easily using a file on a virtual tape from a plurality of programs in a system virtually emulating a magnetic tape apparatus by a disk apparatus. When a use request is generated from other program to a volume of a virtual tape used by one program, a host computer generates and uses a volume of a temporal virtual tape and can thus permit the use of the temporal tape volume from a plurality of programs without drastically changing the specification of an existing tape interface. The volume of the virtual tape temporarily generated is generated in a virtual tape management table and a virtual tape file uses a file of the same type.

  • Patent number: 7650456
Abstract: Conventionally, it has been impossible to use a virtual tape volume having the same volume serial number and different media. A computer implemented virtual tape system enables making definition of a virtual tape volume of another medium with the same volume serial number and definition of a virtual tape magazine of grouped virtual tape in a virtual tape management table. A virtual tape control mounts a virtual tape volume of a virtual tape magazine used in a job or a virtual tape volume on a virtual tape device based on a management table correlating the job with the virtual tape magazine or a command.

  • Publication number: 20080126667
Abstract: A technology in which a magnetic disk apparatus executes data relocation involves the problems how to cope with new setup of file management and hardware failure and performance drop at the time in a data relocation. The invention provide a technology capable of executing data relocation without moving physical data position by a magnetic disk control apparatus when a disconnection operation of a logical volume is made, while keeping setup of an existing file management system. Therefore, the magnetic disk control apparatus is provided with means for keeping a file position information list inside a logical volume, executing optimal data reorganization in such a fashion as to eliminate fragmentation of the list and updating a physical/logical address mapping table. Reorganization of the logical file position is made without the data movement.

  • Patent number: 7007129
Abstract: An object of the present invention is to shorten a transfer time when a virtual tape volume is used on another computer. A system A incorporating a virtual tape unit is connected to a system B at a remote place via a network. A virtual tape transfer processing unit of the present invention inputs and outputs a virtual tape volume of the system A between virtual tape management information and a virtual tape file. The virtual tape file is copied using a copy function between magnetic disk drives so as to be asynchronous to the systems. An input/output request conversion part allows a tape using task of the system B to use the virtual tape file as a magnetic tape file.
