The vehicle control system adjusts a control amount of the vehicle related to a speed in accordance with the communication delay time on condition that current time is within the cancellable period and the communication delay time is equal to or greater than a predetermined time.

The method includes obtaining a risk potential of an object detected by the vehicle, associating the risk potential of the object with an encounter location at which the object is encountered, accumulating the risk potential at the encounter location, and using the accumulated risk potential to obtain a primary estimated risk potential of the object predicted to be encountered at the encounter location. The primary estimated risk potential is lower than the risk potential obtained when detecting the object. The method further includes obtaining a secondary estimated risk potential using a predicted travel movement of another vehicle that avoids a risk due to the primary estimated risk potential, and when traveling at the encounter location again, autonomously controlling travel of the vehicle using the secondary estimated risk potential.

The vehicle control system executes a self-driving control by which self-driving of the vehicle is controlled. The vehicle control system executes a retreat traveling control using the magnetic marker in response to the occurrence of an abnormality in at least part of components and functions necessary for the self-driving control. The magnetic marker provides guidance information by which the vehicle is guided to a safe area. In the retreat traveling control using the magnetic marker, the vehicle control system acquires the guidance information from the magnetic marker detected by the magnetic sensor and causes the vehicle to travel toward the safe area and stop at the safe area based on the guidance information thus acquired.
