  • Publication number: 20070247741
Abstract: In an embodiment of the present invention, with Self Servo Write (SSW), a head slider is used to perform AC erase to a recording surface of a magnetic disk. The AC erase is performed asynchronously to every track. A frequency for use with AC erase, i.e., a frequency of an AC erase pattern is three times or higher than a burst frequency of a product servo pattern or a burst frequency of a radial pattern. By satisfying such requirements, for the magnetic disk of vertical magnetic recording, it becomes possible to substantially stop adversely affecting pattern reading in an AC erase area.

  • Publication number: 20070046286
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide an inexpensive magnetic head tester employing component parts of a production HDD and capable of exercising functions very close to those of a production HDD. In one embodiment, a magnetic head tester employs the VCM actuator and the control circuit of a production HDD and has a lightweight, simple HGA fixing mechanism mounted on an actuator arm. The HGA fixing mechanism fixes an HGA to the actuator arm by a method using a very light holding spring mounted on the arm, a method of mechanically clamping an HGA by using air pressure, or a method of fixing an HGA to the arm by elastically deforming a rubber clamping member by air pressure. Servo control is achieved by the actuator of a production VCM. An end part of the VCM actuator is stopped by a stopping mechanism and is held by a holding spring to prevent the runaway of the VCM actuator. Servo control is performed by balancing the driving force of the VCM and the resilience of the spring.

  • Patent number: 7184236
Abstract: A hard disk drive and magnetic medium including a servo area, a data area divided into a plurality of sector blocks and at least one micro-servo area disposed between two sector blocks. There may be a micro-servo area immediately preceding each of the plurality of sector blocks. The micro-servo areas include an address mark and a track parity check code that allow the detection of an external shock that causes the recording (write) head to skip to an adjacent track in the hard disk medium. The micro-servo area is smaller than the servo areas, and various numbers of different track parity check codes can be used for different resolution of shock detection. An acceleration sensor may also be provided to detect larger external shocks. By detecting various external shocks with improved accuracy, and aborting the recording operation of data if an external shock is detected, the corruption of data in adjacent tracks is substantially reduced to improve disk drive performance.

  • Publication number: 20060262453
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a magnetic head which can suppress broadening of the magnetic field distribution in the track-width direction without reducing the magnetic field intensity. In one embodiment, a main pole is composed of a pole tip having a part providing a write-track width, and a yoke part recessed from the air bearing surface in the element-height direction, where the trailing side surface of the pole tip is made as an asymmetric structure with respect to the track center.

  • Publication number: 20060187578
Abstract: For the purpose of letting through a magnetic flux which reverses the magnetization of the magnetic layer of the magnetic disk, a write element requires a predetermined sectional area. However, if a cross section of a magnetic pole is structured as the one having a large aspect ratio, the pole becomes less capable of letting the magnetic flux through effectively. This phenomenon brings about a lower limit on the track width of the magnetic poles and the track density cannot be raised. In the present invention, by making the width of the write element larger than the track pitch and securing a write magnetic field strong enough to reverse the magnetization of the magnetic layer, and further by writing while shifting a write head comprising the write element, a magnetic disk drive, of which the track width is narrower than the write element width, and the storage capacity is large, is realized.

  • Patent number: 7092181
Abstract: A method of enhancing the thermal stability of gray codes is disclosed. The gray code block in a servo area is recorded with a combination of two different magnetization directions. When the two different magnetization directions are expressed as “+” and “?”, the information “1” is recorded as “++??” or “??++” with the information “0” recorded as “+?+?” or “?+?+”. Since the filter for gray code demodulation is provided with a perpendicular recording mode, the servo area does not use long-wavelength signals that are susceptible to thermal demagnetization. As a result, thermal stability is enhanced.

  • Publication number: 20060171052
Abstract: In a method of servo writing of a magnetic recording system and the magnetic recording system, the signal is recorded in a dummy area with a higher recording density than the burst signal. Also, the maximum bit length of the burst area is shortened as compared with the maximum bit length of the data area. A servo control method for perpendicular recording similar to that for longitudinal recording can be used to reduce the development cost. The anti-signal decay performance is also improved. Further, since the variations of the burst signal along the track width is suppressed, the positioning accuracy is improved. These effects combine to produce a reliable magnetic recording system of large capacity.

  • Publication number: 20060152843
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide optimum servo patterns for perpendicular magnetic recording method. In one embodiment, a burst field of servo patterns is composed of burst-signal parts in each of which a constant frequency occurs successively and zero-signal parts each of which has been demagnetized to a state of zero-magnetization, and the total magnetization of the burst field is made approximately 0. The zero signal portions are formed by shutting off a write current at a time during an operation to record servo patterns on a disk initialized to a state of zero-magnetization. The total magnetization of all servo patterns is made approximately 0 by encoding an address mark field and a track code field of servo patterns by a phase shift method.

  • Publication number: 20060121317
Abstract: The present invention restricts defect density on the magnetic disk based on predetermined polishing conditions by applying a magnetic field to the entire surface of a magnetic disk in a direction vertical thereto, rotating the magnetic disk, loading a magnetic head to the magnetic disk, reproducing signals from the magnetic disk, processing the reproduced signals by a waveform analyzer, counting pulse waveforms of 0.9 times or more a servo-bit length at ½ threshold value of an average output, and measuring the defect density on the magnetic disk giving an undesired effect on the I/O performance of the magnetic disk drive. In a case of a magnetic recording medium using a vertical magnetic recording system, even with fine defect of magnetic layer, a servo pattern cannot be judged correctly. This provides degradation of the I/O performance of increasing the time necessary for reading out large capacity data, lowering the performance of the entire magnetic disk drive.

  • Publication number: 20060092556
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention prevent a decrease in magnetization or demagnetization from occurring to recording magnetization regardless of a direction in which a stray field is applied. In one embodiment, an apparatus for data storage system comprises a head having a magnetic field shield in the vicinity of a main pole, and a cover of the device, using a constituent material with a magnetic field shielding effect, across the cover, or at part thereof. When a stray field in a direction perpendicular to a recording medium is applied, the effect of the magnetic field is alleviated by the magnetic field shield installed in the vicinity of the main pole. In such a case, it need only be sufficient to form the magnetic field shield in a shape optimum for removing the stray field in the perpendicular direction only.
