    Abstract: An illumination device is a device which irradiates light to a reflection-type display panel in which a liquid crystal is sandwiched between a pair of substrates. The illumination device includes a light emitting portion formed such that an organic EL layer is sandwiched between the pair of substrates. A first electrode which is in contact with the organic EL layer includes a metal portion and a transparent portion through which light can transmit. Light does not transmit through the metal portion provided at the viewing side. Further, the illumination device includes a microlens array arranged so as to cover the light emitting portion at the viewing side of the light emitting portion.
